I loved the itinerary of this cruise! I was particularly intrigued by Malta and Rhodes. They did not disappoint. We went ashore every day. SHIP: We had an aft facing suite on this cruise. It was a special occasion so we splurged. Our overall experience was great. Yes its an older ship but I like the layout and its a good size, not terribly big. I feel the ship is kept up well and does not look run down. Its also a fast ship! Our suite experience enhanced the overall experience of the trip. There are a lot of perks involved in choosing this so if you can do it, go for it. We did not take our kids this time, we went as a couple. FOOD: was excellent. Main dining rooms were great and specialty restaurants great too, except for La Trattoria. It wasnt bad, just not much on the menu and not worth paying extra for. Skip it. Buffet at Raffles was also great. SHIP SHORE EXCURSIONS: were well executed and guides were good. We did a lot of them. They are more pricey and have larger groups, so if you are adventurous, go for a local company. We liked the security of not having to pay different entities in advance and risk not making it back to the ship in time to leave. An excursion WAS late back to the ship on this trip but it was a ship excursion so they waited. Otherwise....SOL. DISLIKES: Internet is too $$ and water packages are too $$. But common complaints on any cruise. ENTERTAINMENT: OK. Pretty good. Elements is the best show. This trip was so excursion heavy we were so tired everyday that we did not stay up too late and party. We treasured any down time we had to relax and rest our feet.

Cabin Review

Aft-Facing Penthouse with Large Balcony
Cabin SG 9710
Great cabin space. Nicely appointed and spacious. Great views off the balcony. We spent a lot of time there. BUT you must know that the engine noise and vibration is a problem at night when you are trying to sleep! It was fine when we weren't sailing fast to the next port (under 19 knots) but over 20 knots was loud!! We did have to rush to our next port about 1/2 of the cruise. Luckily I wore earplugs and was able to sleep. If you want a suite, look at reviews for the forward facing suites on deck 10 of the Spirit. They may be quiter but may be windy on the balcony. As long as you are aware of this, deck 9 aft suites are special. There are only about 4 of them and the only ones on this ship.

  • Acropolis
Our tour was "Acropolis and Leisure". We went to the site first then to the Plaka district afterwards and had time to shop and eat on our own. The Acropolis is CROWDED and HOT. Better to go early. The rocks are slippery so beware. Not far to walk, just treacherous and hot and crowded. Also there is Mars Hill, where St. Paul preached the gospel. The tour was good and our guide Kiki was excellent. We also drove around the city a bit and had a quick stop for pictures at the Olympic stadium.

  • City Tour
Our tour was called "City of Kninghts and Mdina". This tour had a large group of older folks on it who should have been on their own private tour. They kept complaining that they could not hear the guide. She was not loud. We did not have headsets on this tour. We met at the port and bussed to the city. We walked around and went to the cathedral of St John. WOW is all I can say. Stunning. Do not miss this church. We went to the Upper gardens and the views are amazing. WE bussed to Mdina, a smaller walled city and walked around there. We got back on the bus back to Valetta and after the tour ended, wandered on our own. There is no time to shop on this tour. Lots of walking. Malta is cool. So much to do here. We barely scratched the surface. Hard to choose which tour to do on this stop.

We took a walking tour of the main piazza and toured the tunnels used during WWII bombing raids. Very interesting. Can't imagine basically having to live down there. We walked along the seaside after that. We stopped for included pizza and salad after.

  • Herculaneum
The tour site itself is good. The guide was great and funny. Herculaeum is a must see. Its smaller than Pompeii and better preserved and closer to Naples. BUT this tour is overpriced for what it is. We also stopped at a cameo jewelry factory first only briefly. Like 20-30 minutes. You can stay on the bus if you want.

Our tour was called "Highlights of Rhodes". We took a bus to a monastery. It was interesting but I feel we spent too much time there. We next went to the reconstructed palace inside the walled city and toured a few rooms there. Then we walked a bit more through the town and the tour ended. After, we were able to wander on our own. Rhodes is really interesting. It had a similar feel to Malta. Our guide was funny and always talking about Greeks and greek culture and making funny comments. He was older with a pony tail. Wandering around the city was really great. We had a snack and a beer and went to the town plaza. There were a bunch of parrots there and we watched them and relaxed. We shopped a bit. We got lost but found our way back because we could see our ship looming in the distance!

Our tour was called 4x4 Island adventure. We loved it! We got our Suzuki's and motored off. My hubby and I switched off driving. Warning, you must be a great stick shift driver! These mountain roads are treacherous and no side rails. Busses try to pass and you have to pull over. You will have to stop and accelerate on an incline. Think Road Rally. But if you like that, then go for it. It was our best tour of the whole trip. We stopped at a number of pretty overlooks and had some beach time. We also stopped to eat at another sea side spot and a small meal was included. Then we wandered through Fira and took the lift down. We had to wait about 35 minutes in the line to descend. We did not have time to go to Oia. Its not close.

We went to the towns where the Godfather movie was filmed. They were quaint towns. Winding mountain roads. About an hour drive. These bus drivers have skills! Quaint towns and a nice side of Sicily to see. We drove by the seaside as well. There was time to have a quick meal.
