Sail Date: Jan 2009

My husband and I wereon the Rhapsody of the Seas cruise to New Zealand on the 7th of January 2010. We had already cruised on her on the 13th of December 2008 to islands of the South Pacific and enjoyed our first cruise, we were really looking forward to this cruise. We got a taxi to the dock which cost us $40AU, and then waited in a long line to board the ship. Once onboard we went straight to the Windjammer cafe on deck 9 as we were not able to access our cabin until 1 pm. The Windjammer was a busy place, we sat in at a table for 4 as we were travelling with my sister and her husband, they had also sailed with us in 2008 on the ROS. After lunch we all went to find our cabins and then wondered around the ship until our luggage arrived. We unpacked a little while later then went to dinner in the main dinning room with our travelling companions, we had all prepaid our graturities and chose my time dinning. My time dinning passengers had to enter the dinning room on deck 5, every evening we ate dinner at 6 pm. We met many different people at dinner, they were all lovely and very friendly, it turned out that we mostly were paired with other fellow Australians. The food in the dinning room was very nice, but the windjammer food was not so appealing as it was in 2008, we all felt that the variety had slipped. Service in the dinning room was fantastic at the evening meal, but was not so good during breakfast and lunch. Our cabin was on deck 2 towards the back of the ship and it was very noisy at all times of the day as everything seemed to shake and rattle. We had no rough seas crossing the tasman on our way to NZ but comimg back it was horrible, l felt so sick that l felt like crying. We had 50 knot winds and all doors leading out onto the outside decks were locked for safety reasons, it was very scary seeing our cabin window covered in water by the ocean waves. l wore travel sickness bands whilst on-board and took ginger tablets when l felt too sick. The entertainment on-board was quite good, we went to the show every night, only missed one night as there was a violinist performing that we had already seen on TV in Australia. In 2008 the ROS used to provide passengers with printed news updates from Australia, Britain and America, these were found near the pursers desk, sadly they were no longer available. We thought that the cabin stewards and crew on-board were fantastic. l would not consider another cruise on the ROS unless it was to calmer seas, as l will remember the bad weather that we experience for a very long time. The ports were good but cold, wet, windy and some times foggy even though it was meant to be summer in NZ, it is much cheaper to by a prepaid all exclusive shuttle ticket for $ 42 US than it is to pay $ 9 US each way whilst in port. l would recommend that any one going on the ROS book a cabin towards the middle of the ship, make sure that if you are prone to getting sea sick that you pick a cabin on a lower deck as the higher up that you go you will feel more vibration and movement.

Cabin Review

our cabin was very cosy, had lots of storage and mirrors, but was very noisy at any time of the day due to the ships vibration.
