This was our 8th Cruise on Oceania. We sailed May 17, 2018 from Rome to Venice on an 8 day cruise. We've always felt in the past sailing on Oceania was worth the extra cost over some of the mainstream cruiselines. However, changes that Oceania made on this cruise different from other European cruises in the past on the Riveria makes me question which cruise line I will use in the future.

The ship, the food, the service as good as in the past. Oceania shore excursions were exceptional. The ports were visited were fabulous.

My disappointment is following.

1. As before there is only one show on the ship at night. Now the shows are at 9:45p.m. We had shore excursions daily around 8:00a.m. so we did not attend any of the shows. I understand they are trying to wait but in the past show at 9:00 worked for most.

2. Oceania advertises free shuttles at many ports and in the past they had a shuttle from the Venice port to St Marks Square. On this cruise no free shuttle was provided and no clear instruction on how to use the shuttle at the cruise port (which only ran within the port). We had to walk over 1/2 mile to the people mover which we paid for (not an issue) and then we were about 1 mile away from St Marks Square. We had excursions booked at every other port but Venice but I did not see any Oceania free shuttle at the other 5 ports either. A few were very close to town.

3. In the past the main dining room was open everyday for lunch which is why I've been recommending Oceania to our family and friends. On this cruise it was closed at lunch on most days.

4. Oceania has done nothing to improve the casino with old outdated slots. On many of the cruiselines they have modern machines.

Cabin Review

Verandah Stateroom
Cabin B1 8060

Very good, quiet and did not feel any motion. We sailed on Oceania in January 2018 and had a cabin on the 7th floor with strange loud noises occasionally. They could never find the cause and it was very annoying.

Jewish Quarter

Booked NCC Airport to take us from the Airport to the Marriott Grand Flora in Rome and also used them from Hotel to Port. Excellent service, on time

If interested in the village lifestyle this is interesting. Delicious Rooster Chicken Soup, all types of Beef on Bone, Pot etc and baked bread as in the past.

My husband loved Lipica Stud Farm and we are thrilled that we booked this combination. Only complaint is that it was confusing meeting time at the ship for the excursion. Beautiful casino right next to the Stud Farm. Wished we had time to check it out but too busy at the Stud farm.

Skocjan Caves

I now know why Oceania did not offer an excursion to Skocjan Caves. It was a highlight of our cruise but you must be in excellent shape due to the amount of walking and climbing up steps. I loved the cave. Wasn't sure if I would have the strength to make it out but thankfully at the end there was a funicular which helped since we came out a different end. No picture allowed but this added to the experience. My husband loved Lipica Stud Farm and we are thrilled that we booked this combination. Only complaint is that it was confusing meeting time at the ship for the excursion. Said one hour after ship arrives. Luckily we got off earlier and if we had to race to the cave for the 10 a.m. tour which we did first. Otherwise it would have been a 2 hour wait at the cave.

Venice is beautiful Disappointed Oceania had not shuttle at port to take you close to St Marks Square. Walked to People Mover about 20 minute walk. Instructions easy to buy tickets 1.50 euro each way. Takes to Plaza Roma then can walk around Venice. Still about 1 mile from St Marks square but nice shops, restaurants etc on the way.

Nice views and walk in Acireale. Not worth what Oceania is charging but if booking a package which reduces the price then its a pleasant activity at this port.

Argostoli (Kefalonia)

Enjoyed the short ride on the small boat in an underground lake. We were lucky to be the first group at the Greek Meze restaurant so we could sit at tables by the water and relax. Food good.
