Overall great cruise. It has been over 10 years since we cruised with NCL - some things were better than other cruise lines, some things could use improving. So here we go... We drove to the cruise terminal. It was easy to find. You drop your bags first and then park. Arrived at ~1:00 pm for a 4:00 pm departure. It was not that crowded. Short walk. Parking is $17/day. Embarkation - it was not crowded on the outside because everyone was in line on the inside. Took about an hour to get on the ship. It kept moving. Not sure why it took so long - but it was the longest we've ever been in line. The Cuba VISA was ready for us - that worked out great. Ship - ship had just undergone a refurbishment and it showed. It was in great shape. We like the smaller ships, so the Sun was to our liking. Easy to get around. MInor thing but great nonetheless. They have very informative signs outside and inside every elevator. So you don't have to carry around a map. Cabin - We used NCL's upgrade bidding process to go from an interior cabin to the balcony. I kept an eye on how many empty balcony cabins were available. Ended up submitting a bid of slightly below average (on their meter) and got a great balcony. Saved over $300 compared to booking this cabin directly. Cabin was clean and location was great - near the rear elevators, but still not noisy. Being on 9, we also did not get any transiting passengers. Dining - ate in the main dining rooms for dinner. Mostly the Seven Seas. The food was good - no seriously, the food was good. Service was very good. One thing we loved - every night, they would bring red and white wine to the table. If you wanted other wine you could get it, but this way you did not have to wait to get drinks. Much better than other cruise lines we've been on. We against our nature and ate early - with 5:30 reservations, we could get a window seat. It made it feel like you were eating ocean side. Could not justify trying a specialty restaurant because we didn't think their food would be that much better. The buffets were, well, buffets - meaning they were just what you'd expect. The all-inclusive drinking is not really all-inclusive, but it sounds good in the ads. You get well-drinks - anything else is extra. It worked fine for us since we liked the margarita, but if you want a particular Scotch or Bourbon, then be prepared to pay. Likewise, coffee drinks and water were extra. I recommend they add a "premier" all-inclusive so that if you wanted a really all-inclusive experience, you could have it. I added a photo of the drink menu. Entertainment and activities - could use an upgrade here. It something wasn't been sold to you, then they didn't do it. We are on a trip to Cuba...Any historical talks about Cuba - no. Any rum tasting - no. Any Latin dance classes - only on the last day. We were on an Alaskan cruise with Princess and they brought a local guide on board and provided lectures for us. We are on a trip to Cuba which virtually no one on board has been to and they don't provide any destination specific activities. But did we learn about the shopping opportunities in Key West - you bet ya! Service - great throughout. Friendly and helpful. Never had to wait for a drink. Ports and Shore Excursions - Key West - did our own thing in Key West. Great city - Duval street is cheesy but we found a great restaurant off the beaten path. Cuba - went on two excursions - the bus tour of old and new and the nightime walking tour. Were they overprices...probably. Were they worth it...absolutely. Were the pre-paid drinks bad - yes. The city is so beautiful and falling to pieces at the same time. You really need to get out to gain the whole story. The guides were informative. Disembarkation - since we had a long drive ahead of us, we carried our bags off. We were 2nd off the ship and it took less than 15 minutes to get from ship to car. Best ever disembarkation.

  • City Tour
Great tour of old and new areas. Guide was informative. Only odd thing was that at the end she took us to a 'local' store to get rum and cigars - definitely not on the authorized tour schedule.

Nice tour of the old city. Sloppy Joes was just okay as was the other bar stop. But they were still fun to see and experience. One item to note is that the order of the tour varies since all the buses leave at once. So we ended up eating at Sloppy Joes first, which was not ideal since most of us had just finished eating dinner.

Explored city on our own - it was our second time there. Duval street is a dump, but we were able find a great restaurant off the beaten path. Had a great visit.
