My husband and I had never been to Europe, so we chose this cruise to get a good "sample" of countries. The 8 days at sea sailing across the Atlantic were relaxing and a great way to start our trip. The Oosterdam is a beautiful, elegant ship. Our cabin was wonderful (see below). We loved all the ports except Huelva, Spain. If you dock there, you might want to take an excursion to Seville. We were there on a Sunday, and after taking a (free) shuttle to town, we couldn't do anything but walk, because everything was closed. The map provided did not include all streets, so it was hard to navigate. We walked for a couple of hours and returned to the ship. The food, in general, was wonderful. Such a nice variety, and something was always available. A few times, we suspected a change in chefs so that the same item was not as good on a different day. For example, we had extremely good cheesecake one day, but slices that tasted like "something was missing" on another day. Very minor, but noticeable. The entertainment was very good at first, but we got tired of repetition in the entertainment. The Motown singers were the best for us. We did not use the casino, which seemed empty most of the time. Fellow travelers seemed to like the cooking classes, although we did not attend. We used a tour company other than EXC Tours for most of our excursions because of price and reviews. One of our favorite excursions was the EXC "In the Footsteps of the Godfather" in Sicily. Wonderful trip into the hills to the towns where the European part of the movies were filmed. Our WORST excursion was also an EXC - a "romantic" gondola ride in Venice that ended up being anything but. For over $300, we had a 30 minute ride of which 10 minutes were holding in place for other gondolas. Our "ride for 2" ended up being a ride for 4 when they had a guitarist and singer jump in our boat. Our view ahead of us was the singer/musician. Terrible, disappointing, expensive experience! The crew on the ship was first class. Our room stewards were unbelievably friendly ad efficient. Almost all workers were quick with a greeting when you passed them anywhere on board. We are already going on another Holland cruise this year. We hope it will be as wonderful as the last.

Cabin Review

Signature Superior Verandah Suite
Cabin SY 8085
We were fortunate enough to have a Signature Suite, with a shower and jetted tub. Even though the stateroom was one that could connect to an adjacent room (thus, lacking one closet), we had more storage than we needed - for 27 days! We actually found additional storage under the bed on one of our last days. That and an entire lower unit were never used. We each had a nightstand, there was a desk AND vanity and many drawers and shelves. We loved having a roomy safe. I really appreciated the individual reading lights on either side of the very comfortable bed. The large flatscreen TV was better than expected, too. The balcony was wonderful, with two padded deckchairs and a table. The only small complaint is that there was noise at times from carts being rolled in the Lido Market upstairs - including sometimes at night and definitely in the early morning (4:00-ish).

Best excursion we took on our cruise. Marta was by far the best guide. She had lived in NY when she was young and spoke perfect English. She was entertaining and talked about interesting facts that we enjoyed. We saw a Gaudi-designed building, Park Guell, Montserrat and Sagrada Familia. It was an unbelievable, unforgettable excursion. Will recommend to everyone!

We walked from the ship to Cartagena and enjoyed exploring the city on our own.

This was an inexpensive, wonderful way to see the city highlights. We chose to ride the bus without getting off. The Red Line is the bulk of the area. We also rode the Blue Line, but there wasn't much to see. One of the audio plugs in our seats did not work, and all the seats were taken at the point the audio started, so we were stuck. My husband wears hearing aids and couldn't use their ear phones, so we only needed one plug, as it turned out. I had to repeat what I heard from the audio-guide. We learned he should use his Bose "over-the-ears" headphones.

  • Madeira (Funchal)
Loved Funchal and it's the perfect size to walk if you can. We walked immediately to the tram and had no wait. We just beat a tour group, so were lucky. We enjoyed the ride and the church tremendously. There isn't any reason to pay for an excursion to do this, unless something else you want to do is included. We did not take the "basket ride" down, but went down in the tram. We then walked to the "market" and enjoyed seeing the local produce, products and fish market. Very nice, clean town.

Loved Malaga. It was clean, modern, but had lots of ancient and old sights. Also has a beautiful beach. We decided to just take the Red line on the HOHO bus since we had found the red line typically gives you the highlights of the town. We then spent time exploring the downtown area on our own, and enjoyed it immensely.

  • Aix-en-Provence
We enjoyed the trip to Aix-en-Provence, but probably would tour Marseille more next time. We had about two hours to walk around Aix, and really didn't need that to see what we wanted to see. We sat at a table at a restaurant for lunch; 30 minutes passed and our order had not been taken. We left because if it took another 30 minutes to get food, we would have missed our bus. The highlight of the tour was our stop at Notre Dame De La Garde Basillica. Tons of tourists, but what a beautiful view and gorgeous church!

  • Monaco (Monte Carlo)
Fascinating city. The wealth oozes out of everything. You have to be fit to explore this town on your own. We walked up and down many times, but it was worth it. First, ventured to see the palace and cathedral. We took the tour of the palace, which was very interesting. We bought a combined ticket to see the prince's collection of cars. After we found it (down the hill, around the town to the left, down an elevator and through a mall!) we really enjoyed the beautiful old vehicles and Grand Prix sports cars in the collection. Found our way then to see the outside of the casino, although the crowds were crazy and we did not go in. Then headed back to the tenders and our ship.

Great guide. We saw St Peter's Square and the outside of the basilica, but couldn't go in because it was Sunday. On the other hand, since it was Sunday, we "saw" and heard the Pope when he addressed the public from a window and received his blessing. It was a magical location, even though the single entrance and body-to-body crowd-pushing security checkpoint were challenging. Wonderful excursion!
