Spa - Paid $326 for Spa access which I always do on every NCL cruise. On this voyage the Spa was consistently overcrowded and noisy with loud conversations among guests who do not understand that the Spa is supposed to be a quiet place in which to relax, read, listed to audio books or music and nap. Lounge chairs were often unavailable because inconsiderate guests would leave a personal item atop the lounge to save it. They would then depart and return hours later. Spa staff did nothing to correct this selfishness. Considering the size of the Spa, the number of available passes should either be reduced or there should be a system to monitor abuse by inconsiderate guests. Spa staff only do not monitor lounge chair abuse. They only replenish towels and robes and squeegee the floors of excess water. Spa staff does not monitor lounge chair abuse and they should. I would also suggest that anyone using the Spa be asked to sign a statement delineating simple rules: do not save lounges unless you are physically in the Spa and that the Spa is a quiet place where passengers relax. Clarify that any lounge unoccupied for more than 30 minutes will be made available to other guests.

Boarding - I have been in many NCL cruises but the NYC check-in was the worse one ever: Chaotic. The first line for security took nearly one hour. Then there was another endless line to check-in and obtain the room key. The final line was to board the ship. Despite having a designated check in time, the wait was endless. If this was anyone’s first cruise with NCL, I can assure you that this was the worse check-in experience EVER. The check in process is Miami is well organized and efficiently run. If it happens again on my next cruise in December I may reconsider my loyalty to NCL.

FOOD - The NCL Menus in the complimentary restaurants rarely vary. I have been on many NCL cruises and the menu is close to becoming as predictable as that at the Olive Garden. After the second of 12 days, I opted for the more varied, albeit chaotic, buffet on Deck 15. I would urge NCL to vary menus especially on consecutive sea days. After all, when you are at sea for 6 days straight, meals are the focus of the day.

Cabin Review

Family Oceanview Stateroom with Large Picture Window

Cabin O1

Rooms - I booked within 48 hours of departure and only inside cabins remained. The cabin on the inside corridor of Deck 5 Forward (very forward) was the smallest of any cruise. It was OK for one person but I did see most cabins with two or more passengers which made me wonder how they all fit in the minuscule room with their belongings. Inside cabins also have no coffee or tea makers: just the basics. That said, the room Stewart was efficient and as good as on any of the other rooms I have occupied on NCL. It’s just very compact but includes what you need.

Be aware that cabins in low decks forward cabins can be rocky and noisy because they are right under the theater! However, after theater ends at 10 pm, these rooms are very quiet and excellent. However, if you nap during the day or anyone in your cabin goes to bed before 10 pm, avoid these rooms.

I was moved to a room with an ocean view window, also Forward, which was excellent for a transatlantic cruise where you would rarely be able to use the balcony because of the speed of the ship, cold temperatures, wind and constant drizzle. The room, 5142, was superb with a bathtub and shower and an ample normal cabin right near the Forward bank of elevators with easy access to the Spa & gym on 15 & the theater on 7. Deck 5 is also convenient when disembarking at port visits (usually on deck 4). The only negative is that during peak hours the elevator will likely stop on every floor before reaching Deck 15 where you will find the Buffet, Spa, gym, pools and other outside activities. It’s a trade off. There are two banks of 8 elevators each so there is rarely any wait time. If you are in Deck 5, you will be one, two of three floors down from the Atrium (whee many activities occur), the specialty restaurants, the casinos, the theater, and the shopping which means you can access those without even using the elevators. Having stayed in both high and low decks, I prefer the lower decks.

If the location of the entertainment and food make a difference in which cabin you select just remember the restaurants are primarily in the back and the entertainment, including gym and spa, are forward. Unlike other ships, there are no elevators in the middle of the Breakaway.

Port Reviews

Cobh (Cork)

Our tour with Paddywagon Tours began at the Cork Cruise Ship Termínal. I had identified Paddywagon Tours in Trip Advisor; their reviews were excellent. They offer a similar excursion to that of NCL for much less. Our group began the excursion app. 30 minutes after disembarkation began. It looked like we had two large full buses and one smaller one. The buses were comfortable, new and had USB charge connections and WiFi. We were collected steps away from our arrival area. The nearly 7 hour excursion did not include lunch and cost 65 euros.

The day began with a drive to Blarney Castle. Admission to the Blarney Castle and Gardens was included. Despite that the day was cold and rainy, I very much enjoyed the gardens with blooming daffodils, tulips and other beautiful flowering bushes and trees.

To enter the castle and garden, we were given vouchers which allowed us to skip the lines and save precious time. We also visited the Blarney Woolen Mill known as the largest Irish shop in the world. After visiting Blarney for a little over two hours, we proceeded on a panoramic drive through Cork. Our guide pointed out the highlights including St Finbarre's Cathedral, Shandon Bells, English Historic Market and the River Lee. My preference would have been to forego Blarney Castle and spend the time in the city of Cork. I found Blarney Castle uninspiring and disappointing. The line up to the Blarney Stone was endless and the climb up the steep steps inside the relatively uninspiring castle interior was claustrophobic. Skip it; visit Cork City instead.

We drove through the beautiful Cork Countryside to the charming picturesque historic harbor town of Kinsale, famed for the battle of Kinsale in 1601. In Kinsale, we enjoyed typical views of the rolling fields of West Cork and made a brief stop to overlook picturesque Kinsale Harbor and its 2 forts - Charles Fort and James Fort. It was just off the Old Head of Kinsale that the Lusitania sank in 1915. Kinsale is beautifully situated at the mouth of the harbor and is exceptionally colorful with picture post card buildings and many country Irish folk with strange and distinguished accents.

In Kinsale, we had two hours to visit this small town and have lunch on our own. Some guests chose to go to have a leisurely sit-down lunch. My friend and I decided to instead have a quick bite of local fish & chips, visit the spectacular Gourmet Pantry for homemade dessert and explore this exceptionally picturesque coastal town.

We relied on Trip Advisor reviews to identify a well priced well-known and highly rated local take-away fish & Chips for a quick lunch. Dino’s was EXCELLENT! The best freshly made crispy French Fries and one piece of local cod. Dino’s is strategically located in front of the marina and has a sit down restaurant should you opt for a casual sit down lunch.Dino’s menu is extensive should someone opt out of the fried lightly battered cod.

The BEST part of our culinary experience in Kinsale was finding the Trip Advisor recommended Gourmet Pantry where owner Sabrina and two young, charming and helpful Irish ladies serve some of the most delicious homemade pastries, pies and savory treats I have even had. They also serve sandwiches and some amazing homemade spreads and dips. We tried the roasted pimento spread on freshly made sourdough bread which was amazing! In terms of desserts, we had a raspberry and white chocolate tart...exceptional, a piece of carrot cake...rich and fresh, and an assortment of their tempting macaroons that were fresh and delicious. Whatever you select, you will LOVE. At Gourmet Pantry you will also find a wide variety of freshly made bread loaves which looked divine! The almond croissants were tempting: fresh, crispy and rich. Their original single serving quiches, savory rolls, sandwiches and salads, could make for a delightfully memorable lunch in Kinsale. Whatever you so in Kinsale, walk over to meet Sabrina and the ladies at the Gourmet Pantry. You will thank me and the other Trip Advisor reviewers who consistently give this small bakery and deli a block away from the port in Market Street excellent reviews. I am so glad I found that and thank those who suggested I drop by the Gourmet Pantry and Deli.

On our return to the Breakaway, we had a quick overview of Cobh, the last departure point of the Titanic. In Cobh, we visited St. Coleman's Cathedral - the final worshiping point of many Irish immigrants and one of the most magnificent cathedrals in Ireland. We took a panoramic drive to view the highlights of Cork including the River Lee, St Finbarre's Cathedral, Shandon Bells, English Market and Grand Parade. Had we had time before boarding, we would have visited the Titanic experience which is barely 100m from where the ships dock.
