We wanted to go for a mini vacation for Mother's Day weekend. We booked this about a month ago, and we were very excited. My wife paid for a suite (which we were told were the best on this cruise ship), and we paid for concierge service as well. Concierge service included some of the entertainment, one of the dinners and two champagne breakfasts, as well as getting assisted to and from our rooms upon getting on and off the ship at arrival and departure. This refurbished ship had paint splatters all over the terraces. The spa waiting lounge area has rust THROUGHOUT! Windows are dirty. The "theater" was nice but don't look too hard or you'll see the holes in the carpet. We went for our "breakfast" at "The Admiralty" restaurant. My wife ordered eggs benedict and the hollandaise sauce had separated (which means that it wasn't made right or was old), the bacon wasn't cooked well and seemed to have been refrigerated for a long time (had "that" taste) and was limp and cold. My waffle was cold and very dense. We left our food on the table and went to the buffet. We had dinner at "The Rock" which we wasn't included in our concierge package (because we wanted to eat at the Admiralty for their steaks and lobsters as the package dinner meal). You cook the food on a heated rock yourself while the staff gets you the fixings. The meat is not marinated or anything. You get sauces to dip them in, but only salt and pepper to cook it. We order rice (fried and jasmine) and both tasted the same...flavorless. The meat and salmon were good quality, though, it seemed (tender and juicy). Most of the staff were helpful when you asked for it. There were announcements on the loudspeakers that no one could understand. And when it came time for the excursions, there wasn't enough help and order for that many people...and the staff stayed in the front of the room where you're supposed to meet and did not go around the room asking guests if they needed help...just stood there goofing around with themselves (they had badges with their names and "YOUTH STAFF" on it). The pools were surprisingly small, and on the adult side, only one of the two small jacuzzis were working. The other had a tacky red plastic net across it showing it wasn't working. The public bathrooms were a hit and miss. The ones by the 10th floor buffet (right by the "Suites") were broken and disgusting. I spoke to one of the staff advising him of the condition and the smell, and he just said, "I know" and walked away. The dinner at the Admiralty restaurant was ok. The rib eye steak was tender but honestly, rather bland (again, the steak sauce helped it). The shrimp and crab claw cocktail was ok (again, you could tell it was frozen and then thawed by the texture and taste). The pistachio creme brulee was really good...yay! Finally, something good. To read about our cabin experience, see below. Oh, by the way, they only have European electrical outlets on this ship, so if you are looking for plugs to charge your stuff, good luck! Our room only had one American electrical outlet, so we had to charge our stuff, one at a time. They had a small kids room which was for toddlers, I guess. I wouldn't leave my kid there; and a teen room for videos. The 11th floor was the deck for the pool(s), DJ, outside dancing, karaoke, and the spa. We got a massage from Gabriela and Daniela and they were AMAZING! They were the best part of the cruise, if you ask me. The gym was ok. The equipment was well kept but there wasn't enough "air" to keep you cool if you were actually trying to work out. I was on the treadmill and the bike and almost died from the heat. The rest of the ship was freezing, though! This cruise is fine if you got the Groupon and don't expect much...really, it would've been fine if we hadn't fallen for the hype we got and paid so much extra money for.

Cabin Review

Cabin 1009
Upon entering the cabin, before we got underway, we were so happy. The bathroom had a jacuzzi tub, a shower, and a functioning toilet. Don't bring a hair dryer, curler, or flatiron. European wall electrical outlets that you can't plug anything into and they provide a hair dryer already plugged into their outlet. Only one American outlet in the whole room. You are warned that if you try to use your American plugs in their outlets, you could cause damages to your property, maybe even a fire. We had a paint-spattered balcony, but it was nice to have something to look out of. We had a small sitting area with a sofa, small table and TV (6 channels, mostly sports, Spanish speaking and/or two English channels, the languages changed depending on the show). Lots of closet space in the bedroom and king size bed with a small table and mirror. Sounds great, right? Then, you get to your room after dinner and it sounds like a herd of animals are dancing on the ceiling!! Why? I'll tell you! Because they went ahead and put their most expensive suites right under the 11th floor pool deck, which is also where the DJ has his outdoor dances, karaoke is done, chairs and tables are pushed across the floor all day and night!! I barely slept for two nights. I'm not kidding. No matter how much we complained, they could do nothing because they couldn't close off the outside deck (nor did we expect them to) but they could've told us about the horrible location of the suites and warned us that if we wanted to rest, that floor was not the one for us. We are close to 60 years old, and we love dancing and having fun, but we love to get some rest so we can function. It was horrible. Also, the air conditioning never got higher than 67 degrees in our room. We were freezing. We had to leave the balcony door open to let the cold air out. We complained repeatedly and someone came TWICE, moved some ceiling panels and poked at it with a SCREWDRIVER...there was nothing there to poke but he was acting as if he was doing something. When we asked what he was doing just poking into the ceiling, he said he would have to come back tomorrow. We complained to the concierge manager, Cyril, and his manager Juan Carlos (or something like that) about moving us or fixing the air. We were totally ignored. More mutterings about there was nothing they could do, or wait. I HATED THIS CABIN and we paid over $1200 for everything!!! Can you believe that?!!! Don't get the suites!!!

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Beach
The white sands at the Grand Lucaya were beautiful, as was the infinity pool. The music playing by the beach was good and the DJ's were doing their best to get the crowd on their feet. Our waitress took our order and never came back so I went to the bar and got our drinks, to find another waitress serving the drinks to my wife (after 1/2 hour). My wife felt bad for the other waitress and paid her as well. Taxes and gratuities are added to the bill whether the service is good or not. Went shopping but the duty free shops were the same prices as US, and in some places even more expensive. Smaller shops held lots of local stuff, but the desperation with which we were approached by the vendors made us leave quickly...it was too much.
