The NCL Sky in the port of Havana

Just 80 miles south of Key West is Havana. So why not take a short cruise out of Miami for a quick getaway to the famous island of Cuba. The price was right for 4 nights. Leave Monday afternoon, back Friday morning. And with NCL Free at Sea promotion and open bar on the NCL Sky, who could resist?

Now, if you are a 'average means' cruiser who in 2018 is looking for the NCL Epic or the RCL Harmony of the Seas in every itinerary there is, you better make a change in direction and set the sails towards the sea of tranquility by shedding a couple more of Benji's and booking on a higher class cruise line. The newer ships for the average cruise line do not make it into every port. And because we love capitalism so much, demand wants more mega cruise ships, and that is what the cruise lines are supplying. They are not making new medium size ships to support all of their itineraries. A look at all the ships that sail to Cuba would unveil that only the NCL Sun (2001) and HAL Westerdam (2004) were built in this century! So, having accepted this, is half of the deal.

Going to Havana provides a certain level of trepidation as to what are you going to find. Yes, this might be a trip back to 1955 sans the DeLorean. But, just like in Hill Valley, everyone is fine and you will be fine too! You need to exchange money?, the area at the terminal is the bigger exchange place I have seen. Want to tour around Havana in one of those old fifties' car, they are driving on the street right as you come out waiting for you to flag them down. And if you feel a little warmer by making plans ahead of time, there are plenty of places in the internet that you can search and contact.

Cabin Review

Mid-Ship Oceanview Porthole Window

Cabin OF

Cabin was good. Porthole very adequate. Bed was comfortable. Shower clean with good temperature and pressure. This particular cabin was right in front of the aisle leading to the elevators and so I thought it would be noisy, but it wasn't. If anything the noises I heard came from the wind beating on items stored on the 6th floor where the rescue boats are. Otherwise, this cabin location was perfect for anything on the ship. I took the elevator twice in 5 days.

One thing you might be innthe dark about is the visa you need to go ashore in Havana. NCL makes this easy by offering you the opportunity to fill out your paperwork and pay online. Your visa will be waiting for you when you check in. And if you forget about it, you can still pay the $75.00/person and fill out the paperwork when you check in. Remember, still, technically US Citizens cant just go into Cuba just for the heck of it. You're in a people to people visit and cuktural enrichment. Any shore excursions from NCL will meet this requirement and they will safe keep your paperwork for the 5 years required. If you go ashore on your own, you are responsible to meet the requirements, including a written record of what you did to satisfy the requirement and safe keep for 5 years.
