The Getaway is a newer large ship, the largest we have sailed on, but it didn't have any of the grandeur we expected of a 4,000 passenger ship. While the condition of the boat was good, the layout left much to be desired. The atrium was small (just three stories tall) and the pools were puny - wading pools that could not accommodate many people. And the sun deck was very small. People had to put their chairs out in the walkways, which made walking the track and laying out in the sun a mess.
We were also disappointed in the on-board activities. Unlike other cruises we've been on there were no preview lectures the day before docking at each port to give the passengers an overview of the town and what to expect. Also, they didn't have the educational classes that other cruise lines offered, such as i-phone 7 operations, Windows 8, photography classes, and goPro classes. The focus of NCL seems to be on making it a party boat: lots of party activities on the small and crowded pool deck.
The food offerings were ok. We ate in the Savor and Tropicana dining rooms. Service was slow and the food was pretty good. Once we ate in the Savor for breakfast. This was a total disaster. The service was very slow, the food only warm and the food delivered to our table was not exactly what we ordered. Another time we ate in the Irish pub and this was a complete disaster. We waited forever for our food, had to get he manager, and even then it wasn't right. I would advise others to use the Garden Cafe for all breakfasts and lunches. Also, expect to pay for ice cream and bakery snacks between meals,
The cabin was clean and in good shape. The bathroom and shower were large and very nice. The closet was small and there was less storage than we have seen on other ships. The balcony was ok - except there was a platform that extended out from the floor of our balcony about 10 feet out which limited our view. I would advise others to go to a higher floor for a better view.
This is a man-made "park" operated by NCL. Very artificial tourist feel. No authentic preview of Belize. Seems like we could have done this in Florida.
Best port to simply walk around and shop and eat - which is what we did.
