I was worried when I read reviews from Dec 2017, but not necessary. This cruise was absolutely fantastic. It is a smaller ship and that’s what we loved. Though the ship is older we didn’t notice anything that was rusted or in disrepair as others mentioned. The crew was attentive, gracious and experienced. It was really refreshing to see everyone dressed appropriately in the main dining room, no (or very, very few) shorts or t-shirts, showing respect for fellow cruisers and the staff that is working so hard for you. Even the kids were very sharp; kudos to those parents and thank you! Our waiter and assistant waiter were very friendly and helpful and so very busy; but outstanding nonetheless. The live main stage entertainment was just ok, but occurred every night. The best was the Planet Earth II feature because of the live music accompaniment, it was very powerful. The Lido buffet was smaller than others, but the selection was still vast and I can’t think of anything else one could need. Loved the “big salad” bar and that you can no longer serve yourself along most of the buffet - it was significantly cleaner and more appetizing, but I will say it holds up the line a bit which is a fine trade-off. We booked all of our excursions outside of the cruise line, so can’t comment on that. All of the ports were fine, Key West was fun, as usual, Roatan was a lovely island with nice and informative locals. I’ve seen Guatemala called a wasted port, but probably not for those who did an interesting ruins tour; we did a quick walk through the vendors and went back to enjoy a relatively empty ship. Costa Maya was certainly very touristy and commercial, but it looked like people were having great fun at the beach. Definitely an up and coming Playa del Carmen.

Cabin Review

Neptune Deluxe Verandah Suite

Our Neptune suite was larger than expected with more storage and plenty of clothes hangers in the closets. Our room stewards were attentive, friendly and fun, always there when we needed them. The binoculars and BOSE speaker were really nice to have at our disposal. Even though its below the Lido deck we didn’t notice any more noise than what you hear in a hotel, slamming doors, etc. Recognize there are several perks that come with a Neptune suite not available with other staterooms that also helped with our outstanding experience on this cruise (like laundry & dry cleaning). The Neptune Lounge is a nice spot, the staff is outstanding and helpful. Of all of the “things you should bring on your cruise” the only suggestions we found useful were the pocket shoe organizer and fold up hamper. Outlets and USB ports were more than adequate. Our walls and doors were not magnetic for clips and hooks.

Port Reviews

Santo Tomas de Castilla

The port was very industrial, the vendor area was so touristy and medium-pressure from the vendors, but they seemed to negotiate much more quickly than other places we have been. Regardless, it was fun. My husband speaks Spanish, so I think that helped. I paid for a table runner what I would have paid online in the US and I have a nice memento of our trip.

Roatan

Went outside of HAL for our excursion. Spent a couple of hours at a great beach in West End, then out on a small catamaran for snorkeling and sailing. Great, great day.
