  3. Grand Princess
This is the third time we have cruised on the Grand Princess. The ship has been renovated since the last time. The new decor was very nice. The ship was sparkling clean and felt new. We enjoy sea days so this cruise is a nice break from others where we have more ports and excursions than rest. Those are a different type of vacation, seeing places we have heard so much about for the first time. Since we have been to Hawaii before, and cruised there too this isn't one of those once in a life time experiences. We will be doing it again in the near future. There are so many activities to chose from if you want to be out there doing things. The entertainment opportunities as well as enrichment lectures are available with some of the lectures being broadcast later on the ship's tv if you had a conflict and couldn't attend the live lecture. The food was very good. The traditional dining options rate in line with places like McCormick and Schmick's for sea food, though the steaks were almost always quite tough. Chicken and poultry dishes were great. The service was awesome. If our waiters Ronaldo and Bernardo notices you weren't eating they were quick to offer a remedy. The Buffet was better than your average buffet, except the english muffins in things like Eggs Benedict were almost always tough and difficult to eat. There was a great number of choices and a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. We used the ships excursions and were very happy with them. Our cabin was noisier than others we have had on ships which was due o neighbors slamming their door and yelling and loud music. It helps to carry earplugs for times like these. It would be nice if they had more recumbent bikes for people who have hip and knee problems.

Cabin Review

Interior
Cabin IA B416
The cabin is adequate for people who don't spend a lot of time in it. It is great value, but you do get the space you pay for. We have stayed in balcony and been in suites but wanted to use money on other things so opted for the economical way to go. We were able to fit everything we had in the small closet and storage shelving and drawers. The suitcases fit under the bed. The room was decorated nicely, kept clean and the bed and bedding was delightful. Our room steward, Alexander, was super. We did experience noise from the rooms on each side which was new to us. The other guests slammed the door and were just loud. I can see that for people who spend most of the time in the room having a balcony to enjoy the sea from would be a benefit. We spent time in public areas enjoying the views.

  • Winery Tour
The guide was difficult to understand some of the time. It was fun to have a positive spin put on the area since I would hesitate on traveling there. The information about the commerce was interesting. Many people were worried about how to get the complimentary bottle of wine on the ship. I assumed it would not be a problem since it was a ship excursion. When we returned to the ship the security people who monitor alcohol had a list of people on the tour and we were allowed to take the wine on. It would be nice if there was a note clarifying this delivered with the tickets to alleviate this concern. The tour of the winery was very interesting. The wine tasting was enjoyable. The complementary wine isn't as good as the ones in the tasting, but after it had time to breath it was better. For those who don't have to fly after getting off the ship buying some of the wine would be worthwhile.

  • Hilo
We used this to get to a couple of places we wanted to see. We have stayed on the big island before and done most things offered on the ship's excursions so this worked for us.

  • Polynesian Cultural Center
We stopped at a few places on our way to the Polynesian Cultural Center. As well as getting a chance to take photos of the mountains and valley we stopped at the Dole Plantation for the pineapple treat, Dole Whip. The buffet at the Polynesian Cultural Center was very good. We enjoyed the presentations and learning about the different island people. Last time we were there was on a Sunday and the venue is closed on Sundays. We enjoyed it.

  • Waimea Canyon
We were so glad we booked this tour. Last time we were there our hiking tour was cancelled and there wasn't anything else. This port isn't easy to do without an excursion so we were stuck in a small area by a beach and hotel. It was raining quite hard so if we did not have the tour we would have gone back on the ship. Again, this was booked so we would get to see as much of the island as possible during our time there. The Canyon was beautiful and the river ride to the fern grotto was enjoyable with entertainment on the boat. Some people had their excursions cancelled the night before because of weather. Thankfully this one worked and the weather cleared up later in the morning so we enjoyed the day.

  • Maui
We wanted a tour that would get us around to experience the beauty of this island. This tour was what we wanted. The road was full of numerous hairpin turns and the driver did an excellent job navigating it safely. We had many stops to capture photos of the views and soak in the landscape.
