My wife and I have cruised a couple of times before with Celebrity and really like the brand, quality and the Aqua Class experience. We travelled this time with friends who have never cruised before and as such had reservations about the whole experience. Lets be honest travelling from the UK and adding things on like upgrading the flights, going into Aqua Class etc means this is no way a cheap holiday.
This was our first time on the Eclipse and we all thought the ship was in great condition, very clean and all the staff take pride in making sure the ship is kept in the very best condition possible. The start to the holiday was not great - on landing in Miami finding the Celebrity representative was a challenge and I have to say they were in our opinion rude, unhelpful and were more worried about talking to each other than they were about us and the other travellers. The overnight Hotel was very good, comfortable and clean. We were told by the Hotel to meet a 11.30 for our transfer to the ship but was told 11am by Celebrity. We stood outside the hotel for close on an hour waiting for the transfer. In the end us and others just got a taxi - it was not expensive and a lot more comfortable.
Once at the port embarkation was very good and we were soon on the ship. Just to carry on with the negatives the return journey to the hotel was even worse. It was total chaos at Miami, no one to help or guide you and the transfer bus drivers did not have a clue who was or not on the bus. Again we simply got a taxi. If we went again I personally would not bother with the transfers and just sort it out myself. It is not difficult and saves all the hanging around.
We have upgraded to Aqua class before and in our opinion worth the extra money. The cabins and especially the bed are very comfortable and was kept very clean by Desmond so thank you to him. The food in Blu is fantastic - the waiters and everyone were so eager to please you and ensure you enjoyed your breakfast and dinner - a huge thank you to them.
We went to the shows every night except two and we all thought the standard of each show was very good. Obviously some were better than others but there were only three that we felt was not great. The house band are really very, very good.
Captain Leo was brilliant - very funny, always available and him along with everyone of the staff on board (apart from two bar staff) were truly wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble. Unfortunately there were two bar staff who were, in our opinion very rude they had very big egos and over stepped the mark. Not a problem we simply went to other bars - problem sorted.
The ports were very good and we always book private tours as we find them cheaper and we like to try different things. The ABC islands were fantastic and I would really like to return to them in the future.
On the sea days the ship is crowded and as other posters have already mentioned getting a lounger can be a challenge. They are packed together and I have to say that is not great. For me the top deck with the lawn area is a total waste - yes it does look nice but keeping it in good condition means it is off limits for much of the time. We all felt that space could be much better utilised.
We have another cruise booked with Celebrity in September and I am sure it will be as good as our experience on the Eclipse.
