Stayed on our own in Long Beach the night before the cruise. Embarkation was painless.
We arrived at the port early so they put us in a lounge which was fine. Able to board at 1:00; luggage arrived shortly after. Apparently you don't have to take the life jacket with you anymore to the emergency drill which was great. Gave you the opportunity to avoid the masses trying to get on the elevator.
Didn't really notice the wear & tear on the ship itself, but our cabin was a little beat up. A lot of stains on the carpet, the hem of the sheer curtain was ripped, the door to the cabinet that houses the refrigerator wouldn't close completely and the toilet had black stains around the bowl. None of these issues prevented us from enjoying ourselves though. Just a little surprised, but then again, think of the number of people that have been in that room. First night, the water in the shower wouldn't drain properly and I reported it the next morning to our cabin steward who called someone to fix it and it was done that day. Princess now has bedside lamps with a USB outlet so that you can charge your devices. I just wish they would do away with those archaic hair dryers.

Location of this cabin was perfect. It was so quiet...never heard anyone on either side of us. It was a larger balcony which was nice.
