We chose this cruise for the itinerary. The ports of call and most of our excursions were wonderful and met our expectations. We chose the Panama Canal full transit on a Ferry excursion (booked through NCL) as our first excursion. Took a bus through part of Panama to board a ferry for transit through the Canal and ended up on the Pacific Ocean side of the Canal. Our bus was waiting for us at the end of the transit and took us back to the Jade. Long but great day was spent seeing how the locks work on the canal and learning about the history of the canal. Lunch was provided on the Ferry. We also went on other excursions in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize and Costa Maya. All were booked through NCL because we feel more protected and safe when booking through the cruise line even though I know they cost more. We had a mini-suite cabin (because of an issue with NCL), but would never book a mini-suite. The cost is more than a balcony cabin, and the only difference is a tub in the bathroom that is small and hard to step into and out of. Our biggest disappointment was the food. NO corned beef on St. Patrick's day (although all the bars were decorated and many served green beer). Very few beef entrees were served in either the main dining room or the buffet. There were many veal and lamb options. I don't know is this was an attempt to pay more to eat in a specialty restaurant or not. Buffet always included burgers, hot dogs and pasta made to order for lunch and dinner, and eggs or omelets cooked to order for breakfast. Plenty of food choices, just not what we would prefer.

Cabin Review

Mini-Suite with Balcony

Cabin MB

Cabin was typical NCL balcony size with built in desk with footstool, sofa sleeper, closet and storage drawers. There was a curtain that could be drawn between bed and sofa sleeper for privacy. Bathroom was different from ones in previous cabins. Partial partition to separate toilet and sink area and small tub shower combo. BIG step up into tub which had a 3 sections sliding glass door instead of a shower curtain. I am 5'4" and I could not straighten my legs completely when sitting in the bathtub. Tub was also narrow. Small dorm size refrigerator was cool, not cold. 2 chairs and tiny table on balcony.

Port Reviews

Santo Tomas de Castilla

Boat ride to Ak'Timinit to visit a children's high school level boarding school and learned about their culture and schooling. Long walk up many steps on a mountain. Lunch was served. Next stop was Livingston Town (accessible only from the water) to shop and see what the town looked like and how the people live. Very informative narrated boat ride.

Harvest Caye

This port is owned by NCL and activities are sponsored by them. We booked a Lagoon & Mangrove tour. Departure seemed very unorgainized. We were close to the end of the line and when we got ready to board the boat, the only seats left were in full sun an on opposite sides and ends of the boat. No attempt was made to ask other people to move or shift seats so my husband and i could sit together. After a "conversation" with NCL staff, we cancelled the excursion. Our money was refunded. Shopping is available in port.

Costa Maya

We did not schedule an excursion but enjoyed walking around the port looking, shopping, watching free entertainment and just people watching.
