First cruise on Holland America (most of our cruises have been with Oceania). We chose this one for the itinerary (note: this was an 11-day Southern Caribbean cruise that departed from Fort Lauderdale on Feb 14, not 18-day Western & Southern Caribbean). Embarkation was remarkably fast and smooth. Same for disembarkation - we especially liked staying in our cabin until the appointed time to disembark. More positives than negatives about our experience. I'll get the negatives out of the way: senior staff/officers were standoffish, food in the main dining room was uninspiring, and the ship had a lot of movement. We expected movement out of FLL into the Atlantic but were surprised at how much the ship rocked and rolled between ports. Positives: excellent specialty restaurants, great evening entertainment, e.g. BB Kings, Billboard Onboard, helpful and friendly cabin attendant, America's Test Kitchen demos. Super friendly servers in Lido - charming wait staff in Tamarind and Pinnacle Grill. We will sail with Holland America again if the right itinerary comes along but only on a ship with the Tamarind restaurant - hands down our favorite!

Better than we expected

This tour looked interesting which prompted me to sign up (I usually go the private tour route). The professional photographer who led this tour did a lot of self-promotion and talked at great length about his 99 year old mother. Not once did he offer assistance to me or any other tour participant, though this aspect was heavily promoted in the tour description.
