We chose to return to the Getaway having previously cruised on this ship in 2016 and 2014 and having good experiences with it. Our timing was limited to our daughter's college spring break, and we wanted to try this Western Caribbean itinerary we hadn't done before. This was the best boarding we have had, very smooth and pleasant except the nasty, wet, dirty bathrooms at the pier. We had a "family mini-suite" on deck 12 and have previously had regular balconies. The only difference was a nice bathroom with tub/shower, double sink, and more space. With 3 of us and 2 females we thought it was worth the extra money but you don't get anything else more in terms of space or balcony size. It was still the same tiny balcony with barely room for 2 people. Our steward, Alistar from India did a great job and kept our rooms immaculate! We went to Burn the Floor, The Million Dollar Quartet, and the Cirque show and all were excellent and highly recommended. Make sure and get reservations before you board! We found the Cirque show food to be MUCH better that last time we were on the Getaway (where it was basically inedible) We had fillets that were tender (and we are picky Midwesterners with our beef!) shrimp, parmesan potatoes, broccoli (too spicy for me) with a nice salad/appetizer and very yummy desserts. We saw Howl at the Moon several times and always enjoyed that, and saw the comedians a time or so for the family shows and they were funny and fairly clean. For our 3 specialty restaurants we first went to La Cucina. Our food here was kind of "hit or miss" and some things were good and others mediocre. The next night we went to Cagney's and had fantastic food! The steaks were great quality, the side dishes were delicious and we had great service. Later we went to Teppanyaki and once again it was a fun show, the food was delicious, and it was so much we couldn't eat all of it. Main dining rooms were sometimes good, sometimes bad depending on what you ordered. The service also varied from indifferent to excellent depending on the night. We only went to the buffet for breakfast once and the food was cold and unappetizing, but if you only want cereal or something quick would be okay. MDR breakfasts also varied, sometimes excellent and other times mediocre. Bar service always seemed to be understaffed and overworked compared to previous cruises. Drinks also varied, and by the end of the cruise the joke was "you get the drink the bartender wants you to have, not necessarily what you ordered". We also didn't feel the staff was as friendly or trying as hard as the last 2 cruises. On those we got to know several bartenders and we didn't on this one. The staff, also, seemed to have limited English in many places, and we sometimes had a hard time making ourselves understood or figuring out what they were saying to us. In Roatan we went to Gumbalimba and that was a really fun experience. Our guide told as all about the park, Roatan, the native plants etc. and then we got to interact with the Macaws and monkeys. In Harvest Caye we elected to go to the Spice Farm and Mayan Ruins on the main shore Belize and this was a long but fun day. You transfer 45 min by boat, then 1 hour by bus on some bumpy roads, but the Spice Farm and ruins were very interesting and we had great guides. Harvest Caye has a nice pool and is a very "sanitized" Belize but we thought it was ridiculous to spend money to eat and drink there and heard it was very expensive. Costa Maya is also just a "created cruise ship port" of a lot of shops all selling the same cheap stuff, and we chose to do the "Salsa and Salsa" excursion. This involved making 3 kinds of salsa with yummy homemade chips and then learning to salsa dance. 2 drinks were included and it was a fun excursion, but the "beach time" after was limited due to the traffic congestion and the beach was full of seaweed and not appealing to swim in. Cozumel port was a mess to get out of for our tour bus and we went to the "Tequila Tasting" at the Mexican heritage park. This was very informative and interesting and included a park tour, a margarita, tacos, and watching some native Mayan flying pole musicians. We learned a lot about tequila and the "correct" way to drink it. We also spent some time at the night time "parties" and thought the Glow Party, Caribbean themed nights, 80's party were a lot of fun. We attended a few things in the atrium and some were funny, some not so much. The entertainment staff did kind of tend to be somewhat "R" rated quite a bit and I would have been uncomfortable with children in some of the circumstances. (we were fine as we were with a college aged daughter) We went to Spice H2O during the day a couple of times and did have some trouble finding spots to sit. The pool was always crowded and we gave up on that except to hot tub in off hours. Once again "chair saving" was an issue with many chairs unoccupied for hours. Our biggest problems on this cruise were the constant incorrect charges on our account, something we haven't encountered in the past. Our daughter was incorrectly billed for drinks when she had a drinks package and we were billed for internet when we had 250 minutes free. We spent several times in line a guest services to correct this, only to be sent to another line with the internet people! They also didn't past our "shore excursion" credits and we had to get in line again. Watch your account EVERY day and get on these problems right away. They were resolved, but I was really tired of dealing with them and it got confusing by the end of the cruise! My husband and daughter also had some acupuncture treatments that they thought were very helpful and done professionally. We never found the time to use the spa facilities but they are beautiful and I would consider doing a "spa cruise" in the future to just relax there. We also didn't use the slide or ropes course etc. but have in the past cruises and it is fun for everyone. I have heard the Getaway is going into dry dock soon for refurbishment but it is still very clean and good shape as far as we could see. Overall we had a very good and relaxing vacation and wouldn't hesitate to cruise NCL again. My husband LOVES the freestyle vibe because he dresses up for work all week and enjoys just being casual. My daughter and I do dress up some because we enjoy it, so we are all happy. I don't think I would choose this itinerary again but it was fun to see new places!

Cabin Review

Family Mini-Suite with Balcony

Cabin M2

It was our first time in a mini-suite and we did enjoy the upgraded bathroom. The cabin, otherwise, was basically a regular balcony room with the same small balcony. I think we would have been fine in a regular balcony, but were limited to what was left available when we booked for 3 people. It was small but we had plenty of storage. The only issue was lack of plug ins for my husband's CPAP machine and the cord they gave us was only long enough for him to sleep on the sofa bed.

Port Reviews

Harvest Caye

We went on the "Spice Farm and Mayan Ruins" tour on the main land Belize. This was informative and interesting, but be aware of the travel times. We spent 45 mintues by boat to the main land, then an hour by bus on very bumpy roads to get to the tour. The farm was really nice to see how many different spices are grown and harvested. Although the ruins aren't very big, the history is interesting and there are numerous "stellae" on display. The area is still being excavated.
