We choose the Koningsdam for our cruise because we liked the 21 day itinerary and we wanted a longer cruise (given how far we have to travel to get to the ship).

Embarkation was relatively smooth and we were onboard by noon and had access to our cabin. We decided to book an inside cabin because we typically spend very little time in our cabin and prefer to enjoy exploring the ports and on sea days we are happy to lounge outside on the lido deck. Little did we know that our cabin on deck 5 was directly above the sound system in the ceiling of the World Stage theatre!! Usually we like to get up early and go to bed early, but most nights we had to endure the thumping and vibrations of the shows with the last one ending around 10:45 pm. HAL did their best to try and relocate us but to no avail as the ship was full (apparently HAL is more than aware that our cabin is very noisy, as are other cabins on the ship located near the various music venues - BB Kings being loud with late shows as well). Despite the noise, our cabin was well appointed with a comfy bed and plenty of storage space. A nice wall mounted flat screen TV with lots of offerings and being able to have it tuned to the ship's aft camera made it seem less like an inside cabin at times! The washroom was very nice, particularly the shower and the amenities. Our friendly cabin stewards were just awesome and worked ever so hard - 7 days a week and long days! Our cabin was kept impeccably clean and serviced twice a day!

The ship is beautiful and despite being larger than other HAL ships, we never felt crowded and the art work around the ship is quite interesting and very different from other HAL ships. We enjoyed the 2nd level of the Lido pool area most sea days and found it relaxing and quiet as we sat and read or just gazed out on the ocean.

Cabin Review

Standard Interior Stateroom

Cabin L

If you like to go to bed early (before 10:45 pm) don't book this cabin due to noise from the evening performances in the World Stage; otherwise lovely!

Port Reviews

Half Moon Cay

We missed our first stop here due to sea conditions as it is a tendered port. Luckily we were able to experience this beautiful island on the second leg of our cruise. We had our own snorkel equipment and really enjoyed snorkeling just off the beach to the left. Saw some beautiful fish. Walked the beach and the sand is so white and soft. Hope to go back one day!

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata)

Walked around but didn't find it memorable.

Bonaire

We rented bikes in town and did a 3 1/2 hour bike ride to Lac Beach and Sorobon Bay (about 40 plus kms round trip) - the Southern route. On the ride back to town we passed the slave huts, the donkey reserve and the pink flamingo reserve (was thrilled to see a flock of pink flamingos fly over us). Beautiful island - will have to go back one day.

Grand Turk

Again, we had two stops here on our 21 day cruise. The first stop was windy and the water was rough so we didn't get to snorkel. Second time around was a little better and managed to do some snorkeling but not as spectacular as Half Moon Cay.

Curacao

Our second time in Curacao. We crossed the Swinging Old Lady bridge and spent time walking around the town. Went back in the evening and enjoyed the city lights!

Aruba

Took a local bus out to Arashi beach for some snorkeling. The bus station is very close to the cruise ship terminal. Beaches are lovely!

San Juan

We did a long walk from the cruise ship along the sea wall and out to San Filipe del Morro Fortress (lots of feral cats along the way!). On the way back stopped in to visit the tomb of Ponce de Leon in the Catedral de San Juan Bautista.

Barbados

Took a local bus to Harrison Caves (weather was cloudy and rain showers) and did the tour. I think the caves are over rated!

Guadeloupe

Did a long walk around Pointe-a-Pitre.

St. Thomas

Went for a walk around town and visited Blackbeards 99 Steps. Shopped a little - many shops still not open after the hurricane.
