We are a married couple (over 55) who choose to spend our vacation dollars sailing on cruise ships. Many people ask why and the answer is simple, we unpack once but get to experience new places as opposed to just one location! We arrived to FLL via MIA on the Saturday before our departure date of Monday. I priced out flights and we found flying into MIA was about $200 pp cheaper even after factoring in the transfer up to our FLL hotel. We stayed at the Marriott Fort Lauderdale Cruise location for our first night as we had points. Nice hotel, nice rooms and a decent breakfast. Not many options for food in the area but we found the Tropical Steakhouse within walking distance (less than 10 minutes) and the meal was awesome! Try their Key Lime Pie!! The next day we moved over to the Hyatt on 17th. This was our 4th stay here and it has some decent shopping and dining close by. Monday morning we took a taxi to the port cost was around $14 with the tip. We never get tired of the excitement of seeing our ship at the port. Reflection had one Princess and one RCCL ship in port with her! We have sailed on two other S class ships so we kind of knew what to expect. The Reflection did not disappoint. We had balcony 7305 which is on the port aft side. Occasionally we would have some smoke odors from the port side smoking area but that was rare. Depended on the wind blowing in the absolute right direction! Our steward was polite and unobtrusive. When we made requests (extra towels and wine glasses) he quickly attended to them. Bed was comfy and located by the bathroom. We had select dining on this cruise which worked so, so. First night we had an offer to attend a specialty dining for 30% off so we decided to go to the Lawn Grill. Had planned on going there so we jumped on the offer. We felt the LG was good. My DH wished he had ordered additional side dishes but by the time we finished our cookie we were both full! Second night we went to the dining room and were given a pager and told it would take about 15 minutes for a 2 top. Less than 10 minutes later we were paged and seated. This evening we were seated in a narrow space with a 2 top to one side and a waiter station on the other. Not horrible but... Needless to say, the next day we had another offer to go to Tuscan for 30% off, so off we went. Had a great dinner and great service. So that brings us to our second attempt at select, ugh! We were seated in a very busy section and the cruisers at the table beside us were loud and one of the women decided to bathe in her perfume. Due to a severe sensitivity to perfume, we ate quickly and bolted. Didn't even stick around for dessert. The next night we decided to try to go late, 8:15pm. We asked Alexsandra if there was a more quiet and private area to dine in and BINGO! Back aft port side with Ivan, Rodney and Rolando! What a turn around. Dining became comfortable and a pleasure. We found the food in the MDR to be very good to excellent. The food in the buffet for lunch was very good and we enjoyed the burgers and fries from the grill. We did not attend many of the shows as we were off listening to live music or dancing. The few we saw were entertaining and new to us. As DH and I take dance lessons we were hoping to be able to dance. After the first few days of not seeing any ballroom music, we made a request. Thank you to the CD staff who managed to get four nights of music scheduled! The live bands were good to listen to and many times we were able to dance to a couple of songs. The Sammy Tones were our favourite band!! Emabarkation was easy and the Reflection now has "tap" Seapass cards so boarding was easy. Disembarkation was easy as well. The line for non US citizens was very long as there were a lot of European cruisers on this ship. They have a different process as they have to do finger prints which slows the line down considerably. We are back to Celebrity for our next cruise in 2019 but we tend to find an itinerary which works with my work schedule so who knows what 2020 will bring.

Wonderful to be back on a Celebrity ship

Cabin Review

Deluxe Ocean View with Verandah
Cabin 2A 7305
Quiet as it is at the end of the hallway before the sunset cabins. Some smoke issues if the wind was blowing the right way.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Snorkeling
Would not suggest anyone try the two stop snorkel trip unless you are a very powerful swimmer. First stop at the shipwreck was downright dangerous due to the undertow, I had issues with my flippers so got out of the water but my husband tried to snorkel but had to get out before even getting his face in the water due to the conditions. Second stop the snorkelling conditions were better but there was nothing to see. Then they dropped us off for lunch which was okay and our "reserved" lawn chairs were not so great. Save your money and go to the beach!

  • Sunset Cruise
Wasn't sure what to do when we arrived in Aruba. Another cruising friend suggested this so we thought why not. Nice sail out and the sunset did not disappoint.

  • Bonaire
After our Aruba experience we were cautious about doing any further snorkelling. Our fears were allayed as the company we booked with were professional and the water was calm. Great instruction to the participants which was completely lacking in Aruba. The water was colder than we anticipated but the fish were amazing. After our two stops (about 1.5 hours in the water) we headed back to port. On the way they offered beverages and a delicious lunch was served. Great excursion!!

  • Cartagena (Colombia)
We have been to Cartagena once before and did a very similar independent tour. Saw the Poppa, stopped for a quick photo op at the .fort, went to the standard shopping and walked around the old town area. Be aware that the vendors are at you constantly but a polite No sends them off.

Beach tour of the West side. Had a great trip even with the bus running out of gas!! Wandered the port area after we got back, very pretty.
