Sail Date: Nov 2009

Since we are diamond RCCL folks, we were looking forward to at least the same type of customer service on a Celebrity ship, but that was not the case. Hardly a day went by that wrong information was given to us by crew members, which caused us great inconvenience. And we were told many times that no one knew answers to our routine questions. No one made an effort to find answers, either. In Venice, the check in process took over 3 hours. We were told the bus back to the ship from Piazzale Roma in Venice was available until 8:30 pm but it was never available. We knew how to use the public bus, so we made it back, but others were stranded. Waterfall Cafe is not a full buffet and had horrible selection and service. Our dining room waiter was lethargic and not helpful to the point that we requested a different table. The wait staff was great after that. We did have a terrific room attendant. She was superb. Evening theater entertainment was very mediocre and amateurish. Room service had to be ordered through the Guest Relations desk and never came with all orders right. We were given a credit for computer time but it was still billed to our credit card. When we went to the Guest Relations to express our concerns, the girl was very very rude and unhelpful. A first for us. The ship was big on germ prevention with hand sanitizer everywhere, but the attendant in the computer room was obviously ill with at least a bad cold and should not have been there. We loved the ports and never used ship excursions and had great experieinces. We decided to use Celebrity's Barcelona 4 hour tour on the last day. It was announced in the waiting for departure area that our luggage would be on the tour bus. But when we left the ship, we were then told to find our luggage-which was scattered all over the area. We then had to get a porter to take the bags to the bus.It was very messy. When we were off of the bus, our guide did not wait for the whole group to gather before giving information, so it was an unguided tour most of the time. Then at the end of the tour we were to be dropped off at Playa Catalonya. The bus parked by a median in the street, not at the outside curb. Our bags were dumped on the narrow median and other buses were in the lane closer to the curb. It was dangerous to say the least. Then we had to get ourselves and luggage to a cab stand 1/2 block from this point to get a cab to our hotel. Despite the splendid ports, we were really eager to get off the ship and the horrible tour experience at the end justified our eagerness to leave the Celebrity ship behind.

Port Reviews

We made our own air plans and took the local bus to Piazzale Roma. This was our second time in Venice and we love the city. Getting tickets for the vaporetto was very handy. We stayed at Hotel Boscolo Bellini near the train station prior to the sailing and were pleased. Spending time at night in the city, near Rialto Bridge was memorable, too.

We used the ship's bus service to the old city and then walked the walls.Save your receipt,as they ask for the wall receipt more than once on the top of the walls. Views were spectacular. The walled city is wonderful, too.

Athens (Piraeus)

Port of Piraeus is full of aggressive cabbies and loose dogs. We walked from the port a few blocks and took a city bus into Athens. a bit longer than the train, but scenic and we got off at Syntagma Square. Hop on buses are there. Walking to many sites is good from there. We took a bus to the Acropolis and loved our self guided walk, but guides are available there, too. We then walked down to Temple of Zeus. While waiting for a bus, 2 nicely dressed young men walked up and stood on each side of us. We quickly stepped back to observe them. They then walked away. We think they were attempting to steal from us.

Athens is dirty, crowded, and intimidating, but to see the iconic ruins was worthwhile.

Port very clean, modern and safe. We arranged a tour with Hello Ephesus. We had a Mercedes van, driver and guide to ourselves for 8 hours for $160 US, including entry fees and meal. Ephesus was crowded with cruisers but worth the effort. Our guide took us to a ceramic factory and a rug showroom. Could have skipped them. The second day, we strolled through the port city and found it to be clean and charming with many goods for sale.

It was a Sunday, so few shops were open. Took the hop on bus around and there was a big open market near the "Egg" fort and park. That end of the city is quite nice, but downtown is dirty and dark.

Rome (Civitavecchia)

Took the train from Civitavecchia to San Pietro station. We could see St Peter's from there and walked to it. We had obtained tour tickets on line from the Vatican website and were able to skip the long lines to enter the museums. We needed to be there 30 minutes prior to the tour time. And the museum entrance is a 15 minute walk from St Peter's square. the museum tour was great and then we were able to enter the catacombs to see tombs of saints and popes. Then were entered from below into the basilica. It was splendid and overwhelming and a must see. We then did the hop on bus. the next day we returned, took the hop bus to Fountain of Trevi, walked to the Pantheon, Forum and Colosseum. We then took the metro to Roma Termini and the train back to the port. There was an emergency on the train(a man had heart attack)and the train stopped. We then had to wait, the rush to another train. We were glad that we had left Rome at 3 or so, and got to the ship at 6:30pm It is usually an hour and a half to go from Rome to ship.

Port 7 Liverno Rate it 3 but access to other cities is easy. We took bus to train, went through Pisa(been there) and went to Lucca. it is a walled city with wonderful sites. Very quaint and charming. Port 8 Villefranche Rate it 3 but access to Monaco and Nice We walked from port to city but to Monnaco, transferred to old city bus and saw palace, change of guard and cathedral where Princess Grace is entombed. Then took another bus to Nice. rude driver, but great sites along the way.

Port 8 Barcelona Rate it 4 Took hop on bus and enjoyed the city. Loved Ramblas. Much safer that we had been told. Stayed at Hotel Barcelona Universal and were pleased with it.
