Embarkation: Ft. Lauderdale. This was the usual waiting in line and corny picture. It went relatively quickly. The food on the deck was so-so, I would suggest getting a sandwich as the hot foot was not the greatest. Our room was Concierge Class on the sky deck, it was an ok size with a small balcony. The storage was adequate. The shower was bigger than expected. The fruit on the first day had seen better days, but this improved in the days following and the Champagne was best enjoyed with a mixer of fruit juice. The bed was comfortable. The food during the cruise was good if you chose carefully. We never made the breakfast in the dining room but the breakfast buffet was good. They had the usual choices of bacon, sausage, eggs (any way), cereals etc. They also had a poached egg station and an Asian breakfast station. The brunch in the dining room was not my favorite, the breakfast on the deck was much better. We also never made lunch in the dining room but the lunch buffet was ok. The selection of the usual buffet choices, sandwiches and the grill were enough to fill one up. The grill had hot dogs, Bratwurst, hamburgers, onion rings, fries and unusual nachos. Dinner in the dining room was good. The left side of the menu reoccurs every night and the right side is new every night (except one repeat night). Everything was good and I am a picky eater and normally eat in nice restaurants. For dinner there is also the choice of stir fry and sushi at the buffet and a sit down option (for $2) which I did not try. We also ate in the SS United States. This meal was way too much food and was in my opinion not worth the extra price for the quality. The lobster tail was dry and overcooked. The surf and turf was a much better piece of lobster. The cheese course was nice, although the waiter explaining what a cheese course was was very condescending (who doesn't know what a cheese course is?). One of the best parts of the food on the cruise is the free ice cream. They have different interesting flavors at the buffet with your choice of toppings. I would highly recommend trying the ice cream. Ports: Puerto Limon, Costa Rica: Touristy shops at the end of the pier. An interesting town with a pedestrian zone, park and market. Panama Canal: Very interesting to see. After getting through the canal the seas became much rougher, getting increasingly worse every night with the worst night being the last one. Manta, Ecuador: We took the Celebrity bus to the local market. This market was small but had a great selection of the usual alpaca merchandise, Panama hats and paintings. The prices were good. Lima, Peru: The ship docks in Callao. We took a taxi for $35 downtown from the dock. We then took a taxi to Miraflores for $5 and went to all of the markets. The taxi from Miraflores to the dock was $8. Arica, Chile: Took the excursion to the Lauca National Park. This was interesting as it went past the geoglyphs, Putre and into the park. It snowed while we were in the park and some of the other passengers required oxygen. The bus ride there and back is along a steep road and it was not the most comfortable. I would not recommend this trip if you are not in the best health (the changes in altitude) or if you get car sick. La Serena, Chile: The ship docks in Coquimbo. Took a taxi to La Serena, walked around town which has a nice pedestrian zone and beautiful churches. Valparaiso, Chile: I would recommend taking the funiculars and walking around the upper part of the town. The streets are narrow and the houses are very interesting. There were several warnings about what not to bring into Chile including wool and straw. At the pier you stand in a long line with your carry on bag next to you. A dog then comes and sniffs the bags. All in all it was a nice trip with interesting ports. The crew was very friendly and helpful.
