Our third cruise with Thompson, the first two very enjoyable, but this will be our last. If you want a time expired tatty ship and a company that wants to up sell the minute you are on board, this might be perfect for you.
Upgraded to a suite and inclusive drinks package. BIG MISTAKE.
Suite: description - ‘view may be partly restricted by lifeboat’.
Reality: hardly any view through two tiny windows, largely obscured by lifeboat. Very little natural light, dingey furnishings in shades of brown that made it a depressing place that we couldn’t use during the day. The lighting in the ‘suite’, (actually just a fractionally larger cabin) was so poor that even in daytime it was impossible to read a book unless right next to the window .The cabin noise was dreadful all night as the structure of the cabin creaked.
Drinks package a waste of time, all the wine, red, white, rose, prosecco, of an undrinkable standard (previously very good), meaning that wine had to be bought from the special wine menu at full restaurant prices. Cocktails were frequently lacking the alcohol described - are the staff instructed to restrict it?
THE TATTY SHIP! Oh my word, it just vibrated100 per cent of the time, even in port. When you look around you everyone is shaking in their seats, it looks like a ship of Parkinson’s disease sufferers. Even in bed you are stil being shaken. Nausea for the whole week and that had nothing to do with the action of the waves.
Bad supervision of the sun beds at sea, people hogging beds all day with towels, most of the time less than 50 per cent beds occupied, while people were away for hours, hence lots of people couldn’t get one.
AND THEN THE UPSELLING - starts the minute you are on the ship, £15 for use of your cabin safe, bad value excursions, £15 a day for internet that was patchy and could be used in reception or coffee shop, and the final insult, £2 a time for sickness pills that you only needed because of the ships vibration!
Good point? The excellent, friendly, efficient, hard working staff (actually the only good thing about the cruise).
Message to Tui Management: if your new business model is to rip off the customer with a sub standard experience and extract every penny you can from them while they are at your mercy onboard - you will get what you deserve.
Among my family members we have between us 20 Thomson cruises. They have complained about similar attitudes on Discovery 2. You have seen the last of us, and advised our friends about our experiences.
See above, but made bearable by excellent cabin steward and very good quality of housekeeping
