The morning started less than ideally. The Port of Galveston was closed due to fog which kept our ship out of the harbor. Beginning at 9 A.M. and at the top of each hour thereafter, Royal Caribbean sent out emails keeping us informed of all that was happening. As the stubborn fog lingered and the port stayed closed, we were informed that we were each given a generous $25 shipboard credit to help cover the expense of our lunch and any other incidentals. Being well informed and generously taken care of by the cruise line (after all, they control neither the weather nor the closing of the port) allowed us the time to explore Galveston.
There is much one could do in Galveston from enjoying a casual walk or bike ride by the sea wall, enjoying the wide variety of dining options for any budget, taking in some of its historic sites, or leisurely exploring the numerous shops closer to the cruise terminals. This year we chose the latter option. The shops of Galveston are as eclectic as its people. It was a joy to take our time getting to know both.
As the fog finally lifted and the ports were reopened, the embarkation process was handled professionally and efficiently. I will not pretend that we walked right onto the ship without standing in lines and waiting with all of the others trying to board the ship. Of course that happened. It unavoidable, but, both those working for the port of Galveston and for Royal Caribbean were both helpful and courteous.
