I emailed Celebrity to complain and tellingly despite 2 reminders I have not even had the courtesy of a reply let alone a substantive response. That should tell you all you need to know about this cruise company.
My wife and I were passengers on the Constellation cruise out of Singapore staying in stateroom 3032.
We were expecting the holiday of a lifetime but instead had a number of adverse issues which ultimately left us dissatisfied and dissapointed.
We tried to resolve these issues on board. Some were resolved the major one was not.
The issues ( in chronological order ) were as follows;
On embarking we were approached and asked if we wanted to buy a drinks package. We replied that we had already done so. One of the girls selling the packages looked at our Seapass and said " no you don't". We then had to queue for 30 minutes at Guest Relations to try to resolve. Whilst waiting we heard many people with the same complaint. Eventually we saw a woman called Xing who insisted that we did not have a package. We knew that we did because we deliberately took a more expensive cabin to get the package. We therefore stood our ground and were not prepared to be fobbed off like others in the queue. After much messing around she finally accepted that we were entitled to the "classic " drinks package and gave us amended Seapass' . Ok issue resolved but not a good start!
My wife is vegetarian. This was detailed and related to Celebrity by the travel agent .The first time we went to the San Marco restaurant for lunch there was no vegetarian menu which we requested, the only option for the main course on the standard menu was pasta. On the next lunch time we went we there was no veggie option for the main course .We complained. We were told that this was their standard practice and that vegetarian food was available in the Oceanview cafe. This was not acceptable as we do not appreciate that type of dining and in any event your guest info book in the cabin clearly states that there is a vegetarian menu available in the restuarant for dinner AND lunch. I pointed this out but the deputy maitre d was having none of it. I explained that as per ( I think) page 19 of the booklet she was wrong but even if there was no veggie menu clearly there should be a choice for lunch for vegetarians. I asked to see someone more senior. They apologised and offered to cook something of her choice the next sea day ( the only time we took lunch on board). The meal cooked ( a Thai curry ) was delicous but why - yet again - did we have to go through such a nonsense to get what is a perfectly normal entitlement? There after we checked the lunch menu the night before and ordered accordingly.
There was an outbreak of the Novovirus whilst onboard. Fortunately we were unaffected. However I am far from suprised about the outbreak because on 3 seperate occasions in the Mast bar and Sunset bar I was served with dirty glasses. On one farcical occasion at the Mast bar I pointed out that there was some orange juice still in the bottom of the glass and asked for a clean glass. The next glass had lipstick on it. When in exasperation I pointed this out the the steward he laughed. An Australian guy stood at the bar expressed his disgust. From then on we just drank straight out of water or beer bottles whenever possible.
Our major complaint relates to the ports of call and excursions. It was unfortunate that we could not tender at Nha Trang due to bad weather but the Captain's decision was totally understandable. However every other port was located in the middle of nowhere and the ports of Laemchabang , Chan May and Phu My were industrial , commercial container ports without any infrastructure for passengers. No substantive port information was given prior to booking or arrival. As a consequence we were forced to take the ship's expensive excursions. We booked 3 trips as follows ;
a) Leamchabang - a trip to Bangkok to see the Grand Palace and Venice of the East. No real problem with this trip except for the distance to and time taken to reach Bangkok and - you guessed it - no veggie option for main course for lunch. We had asked the guide Chevvy if there was going to be veggie food and he said yes. When we pointed out to him that there was nothing he said you have salad!! Other than this he was a decent guide. We were shatterd by the end of the trip which due to distance and traffic took 4 hours to return from Bangkok to the ship.
b) Chan May - trip to Imperial Hue - this was when the real problems started. Despite going straight to the port after being unable to tender at Nha Trang and arriving early the tour commencement time remained the same - which I found suprising as we could see all the buses waiting.After assembling in the theater as instructed and due disorganisation we then experienced a significant delay in disembarking. We got on the coach an hour late and were immediately told by the guide ( Love from Saigon Tours ) that we did not have enough time to complete the tour. As a consequence we were frog -marched around every attraction with no commentary. An American guy said quite loudly " hey man I didn't know this was speed tourism!" Everyone in the group had the same opinion and urged the guide who seemed obsessed with getting us back to the ship by 4.30pm to slow down.The only place that we spent any time was at the hotel in Hue which served a mediocre lunch in any event.
c) Phu My - trip to Ho Chi Min to see Lacquer factory , Bha Tran market and shop at Dong Khol street - this was the worst of the lot. We got to the theater at 7.15 am as instructed to commence the trip at 7.30. We did not disembark until 8.30. We were told this was due to immigration problems but when we disembarked there was no immigration and no requirement to stamp the Visas. We were repeatedly told in the theater that the delay would not affect our trips. We knew this was a lie and it was! We were supposed to have 45 mintes in the lacquer factory 45 minutes at the market and 3 hours at Dong Khol street. This was shortened to 30 , 30 and 2 hours ! We actually arrived back at the ship before the time we should have been back even though we started more than an hour late! The guide Bao was lovely but clearly also obsessed with getting back to the ship.
We trid to relove this complaint with Angelo in excursions and yet again were surrounded by people with broadly the same issues. He said he would investigate and come back to us. He did not!
This was our first trip with Celebrity and as set out above we were dissapointed. We have cruised extensively with other cruise companies and never encountered these problems.
