We chose Viking River Cruises based on recommendations from good friends who've great times river cruising with them. We chose this itinerary again based on their recommendations. Their assessments were validated by our experience on this cruise. I've always wanted to travel up the Rhine and see all the sights along the way. This cruise did that in a very relaxing and comfortable way.
The ship, the staff (especially the cruise director, housekeeping and restaurant staffs), the food, and the shore excursions all combined to a once-a-lifetime experience. We would not hesitate to cruise with Viking again in another river or perhaps on the ocean.
We like the way Viking does these cruises - there were no children on board, there are no casinos or large screen movie theaters or resort-type shows. We like the open dining options - we can eat when we want to, we can sit where we want to, we can interact with other passengers without being forced into it. We liked that at every port, a shore excursion was included free of charge. While these are not as in-depth as I'd initially thought, they do provide an overview of places that we may want to visit again in the future.
Cabin was very clean, everything worked, and the amenities were great. It was a little smaller than depicted in the Viking photos but was still very comfortable. Cabin stewards were top notched - very friendly and courteous.
We only had an afternoon in Amsterdam having arrived in the morning. We took a walking tour on parts of Amsterdam which was very descriptive and well worth the time, in spite of the heavy rains. While short on duration, it showed that Amsterdam would be a worthy vacation spot in the future.
