We chose this 14 day cruise because the itinerary and the fact there is no return to home port midway. Both embarkation and debarkation went smoothly. The sail away party was nice but there was no live band, only piped in music. Our mid-ship interior cabin suited us perfectly - not much movement and it's really dark when the lights are turned off. The interior cabins on this ship class have only one three-prong 120V receptacle (at the desk) and one two-prong receptacle (mounted high above the bathroom mirror). Bring an extension cord as you will likely need it. Note too that the TV in this cabin class is small and mounted such that it is difficult except when sitting on the sofa. That said, having been on this class of ship previously we knew what to expect. Our room stewards were great (as usual with HAL). The room was typically made up each day by the time we returned from breakfast. I do need to mention that while this ship accommodates about 1250 passengers, there were only about 850 on this cruise so we had no lines for dinner or getting on or off the ship. We like the Lido for breakfast as it provides many, many options. Lunches were either in the Lido or the pool area. The Lido food is very good and there is plenty of variety. The Dive-In hamburgers were good but not as good as on other HAL cruises. I fell in love with the New York Pizza - made-to-order 12" pizzas with your choice of toppings. We had one dinner at the Pinnacle Grill and one at the Canaletto. While the service at the Pinnacle is top notch, we thought the food was not much better than the main dining room. The Canaletto, on the other hand, was excellent. All other dinners were in the main dining room. We like meeting fellow passengers so we always request table sharing. The entertainment in the Showroom at Sea (other than the HAL singers/dancers) were excellent. The dancers/singers were just not up to par with what we've seen on other HAL ships. The magician (Jeff McBride) was fabulous and the pianist were especially good. The partnership with America's Test Kitchen is a real improvement and something we really enjoyed. Other on-board activities were lacking. No silly games like golf putting, ring toss, etc. No Karaoke. A few trivia games but not much else. Our favorite stop is always Half Moon Cay. It's a day at the beach with a really nice island BBQ. It doesn't get much better. In summary, this was a pretty good cruise (top notch service, good food and we met lots of friendly people). If you’re a baby boomer (as we are), you’ll probably this cruise and all HAL cruises in general.
Interior cabins are small but adequate. Lots of storage space. Beds very comfortable. Nice for sleeping because it is very dark when the lights go off. Mid-ship location limits rocking.
Our favorite stop. Absolutely beautiful. A day at the beach with a great island BBQ.
Nice shopping area just off the ship. You'll need to take a taxi to get to town.
Always wanted to swim with the dolphins and I did.
We'd never been there but always wanted to go. Short taxi ride to town which is not touristy. We hired a taxi to take us on an island tour. Great time. People very friendly.
Arrived on a Sunday so most everything was closed except for the dockside vendors. We got a sense that they didn't care if you were here or not. Not very friendly. Won't go here again.
We'd been here several times before. The tourist area is small be adequate. You can walk downtown from the ship if you want to get a sense of what St. John is like. They have a small casino if you want to gamble. These people really welcome visitors. Dockside was a steel drum band playing their hearts out. Take an island tour if you can. The cabbies in the orange shirts just inside the tourist area will give you a good one for less than what you pay the cruise line.
We'd been here a number of times so we elected to just walk around in old town. If you've never been here, you must visit the old forts. The Bacardi tour is not worth the money.
