We are the type of travelers who reside in very rural Washington state, so an inside cabin works great for us. Very dark, very quiet and cheaper. All a big plus. Our room stewart Rio was excellent. He knew us both by our first names by the second day. He always greeted us and asked how our day was going. Our room was cleaned in a timely manner and turn down service every night included the cute towel animals. When Rio noticed we had pool towels he placed clean ones in our room each night saving us the hassle of going to the pool area and grab our own.

We choose Norwegian for the free style dining. Hubby will tolerate the sit down dinner restaurant once, so we primarily eat at the buffet. The buffet offered a large variety of food with items every night that I had to just try. I found the food flavorful and was surprised to find Dahl, which became my default dish. For someone like myself who vowed not to have desserts (I know a sin when you are on vacation) there was always fruit available. The cook staff was very accommodating. I asked for prunes one morning and was given a bowlful from the kitchen.

The full service restaurants were not impressive. The one and only dinner In the main dining room we experienced very slow service despite getting there as soon as it opened and not worth the hour spent. For the Irish pub eatery one meal was great, so I went back to try another dish and it was marginal. Basically don't order fajitas in an Irish pub. The asian restaurant was my worst experience. Slow service, a choice of three items since I am allergic to sea food, and the food was either salty or tasteless.

Cabin IB

The cabin was small (expected) but nice. Lots of storage for organizing our clothing.

Port Reviews

Puntarenas (Puerto Caldera)

Very disappointed in this port. We were in Costa Rica four years ago so we were surprised that this port was very dirty. We walked around a little bit to check out the area and didn't find much. The BIGGEST disappointment was the trash. I got into the ocean using the local beach right there at the port only to have garbage float past me on the waves. The other disappointment was not being able to find an espresso in coffee country. We only located one business with an espresso machine and the employees totally ignored us, so we left. Not a good showing for Costa Rica.

Corinto

The port was nothing great. It is a commercial shipping port. But our privately booked tour was awesome. We hiked the volcano Cerro Negro and boarded down the side of it. Our tour guide was excellent and extremely informative. Hiking the volcano is an excursion offered through the ship, but you walk back down, plus it cost 50% more than what I paid.

Puerto Quetzal (Antigua)

One of the nicest ports we went into. The private tour I had booked took us on the beautiful drive through farm country on our way to Antigua. There the guide showed us the highlights of this old beautiful city, then we were off to the thermal spa. At the spa we had an excellent lunch soaked in the volcano heated waters at set intervals, and was given a fresh mango smoothie. We also opted for an hour massage. On the way to the spa we went along the outskirts of Guatemala City which was the poor area and in contrast to Antigua.
