  3. Norwegian Sun
We sailed out of Buenos Aires with another couple. We had never been to South America before and heard it was filled with natural beauty. It did not disappoint. This was our third time on the Sun. It is one of NCL's older ships and doesn't have as many amenities as some of the newer and larger ships; however , the staff was amazing.Due to its size it doesn't have the number of bars and lounges as bigger ships. One thing that bothers us on NCL is how they constantly take over the exercise room to try to sell weight loss, foot relief, products to look younger ,etc. They need a separate room for this so people can use the room to stretch ,etc. We ate in specialty restaurants on 6 of the 14 nights. All of our meals were very good. We also enjoyed the shows, disco, and piano bar. We loved all of our excursions. In two ports we chose to see penguins. Each experience was very different. Puerto Madryn was very warm and an almost desert environment next to the sea. The Falklands was chilly and windy. Both were outstanding and not to be missed. On one sea day we ran into a large pod of whales. The captain turned the boat around for better viewing . For over an hour we were treated to a very rare occurrence that far out at sea. The whales would swim close to our ship and put on a beautiful show! Sailing around the Horn was great ( bumpy -but not too bad) and the beauty of going through the Channel was wonderful- you will pass by 5 glaciers. We were unable to get into Punta Arenas due to 100 mile per hour winds. This can happen in that part of the world! On some excursions we did the hikes though the national forests and were treated to seeing the Andes mountains, waterfalls and volcanos. If you love the outdoors, this is a great cruise. When we docked in Chile I arranged for a guide from "Tours by Locals" to pick us up for a 9 hour day touring Valparaiso, Vina del Mar, and a visit to a winery. He then dropped our friends off at the airport in Santiago and we stayed an extra night in Santiago. The next day we did a "hop on hop bus" before the late flight back to the US. P.S. a warning to travelers - my husband was physically accosted in an upscale leather shop very near our lovely hotel in Buenos Aires- right before we were leaving to board our ship. The man had a friend waiting on a motorcycle outside to make his getaway. He was a pro. His watch was ripped off of his wrist . We found out from fellow cruisers that they knew of a number of incidents, cell phone stealing, camera theft, watches, necklaces etc. Don't wear or use anything that will attract attention. We have travelled all over the world and this was a first for us. That said, he was fine except for a cut wrist and we did not let it spoil our vacation!!

Cabin Review

Aft-Facing Mini-Suite
Cabin M1
Very nice view from the rear of the boat. I liked having an area to dry my hair and do makeup outside of the bathroom. The bathroom has a tub/shower combo and an enclosed private toilet. The room has a walk in closet and plenty of drawers and storage. Bed was comfortable .

  • City Tour
We arranged a private tour for the four of us with Tours by Locals. W were met at the ship and spent 5 hours walking the city, hopping on a bus to go to the beach area and learning about the city, history, and culture from a retired gentleman that grew up in the area and raised his family there. It was a great day and very enjoyable. We walked about 5 miles.

  • Puerto Montt
Breath taking scenery! The clouds disappeared on our drive to the falls and our driver stopped so we could take a photo of snow capped Mount Osorno - as it is often hidden. The weather continued to get better and it was spectacular. We went to Petrohue Falls and walked around - great photo op. After that, you drive up the mountain and can hike on the volcano for about 30 minutes- gorgeous. You then drive to town for a late lunch at a hotel restaurant . The property was lovely and it was a very good meal. it was a fantastic day . Very glad we picked this excursion.

  • Gentoo Penguins in Bluff Cove
We explored the small city before our tour started. We were driven to a spot where the four of us were met by our 4 wheel driver to take us out to the beach area. It was a blast going over the very bumpy fields to get there. The winds were very strong at the beach. It was filled with penguins. They also have 6 pairs of King penguins. We saw them feeding the new chicks. The other babies were several months old and covered in downy feathers. There is a naturalist available to answer questions. It was fantastic. You are then able to walk to the shop at Bluff Cove and have tea and cakes, cookies, etc. It is mouth watering array of sweets and is included. The gift shop has some beautiful items to purchase (which we did) Afterwards, you meet your driver for the fun ride back to the pier.

  • Train to the End of the World
Very pretty hike through a " cold forest " . It is not strenuous - people walk slowly. We would have liked more hiking . You will only cover about 2-3 miles. It was drizzly so we wore our rain gear and hats and we were fine. We enjoyed the scenery and being outside.
