Travelers: 2 couples, 1 bachelor, all in their 30s-40s. We chose this itinerary as it would be a first cruise for couple B. Myself & my husband have cruised the NCL Dawn several years ago with a very similar itinerary and have done a Carnival Mexico cruise out of LA. Bachelor has cruised with Royal Caribbean before. As a group, we are not big partiers, not heavy drinkers and mostly wanted relaxing unwind time mixed with mid-level port adventures. 3 of us loaded up our kindles/ipads with intention of reading more than 1 book.

So with that in mind, overall we enjoyed the food the most and the relaxed setting NCL provides. While I make it a rule to wear dresses while on vacation as I don't in my day-to-day life, the other lady of the party doesn't own a dress that I'm aware of. My husband is extremely uncomfortable in anything more than slacks and a button-down short sleeved dress shirt. Being able to go in nice shorts/slacks & polos to any of the restaurant venues was important to us. We enjoyed the food in the main dinning room, although service at times, particularly in the mornings even on port days was really slow. One breakfast it took over 30 minutes and prompting for my fruit and yogurt "appetizer" to be delivered and then another 20 for the main course. Food was hot, delicious and the staff friendly and approachable. We remembered the waitstaff's names days later because they impressed us.

Cabin Review

Mini-Suite with Large Balcony

Cabin M6

We were in 8724, mini-suite with a large balcony. I was very pleased with the layout of the cabin and there was more storage than anticipated. Having the double sinks was nice and the shower jets were good when we needed to relax. The balcony was definitely nice, came with 2 lounge chairs, 2 regular chairs and a small table. I was able to do sun salutations on it to stretch out. We asked our cabin steward, Wayne, for an egg crate when we boarded cause my husband has a bad back. He was able to secure it on day 2 and get it on for that night's sleep. Wayne was approachable and friendly, he said hello every time we saw each other and responded promptly to our direct requests. But the cabin was also the source of one of the on-going annoyances throughout the cruise. My husband collapsed on embarkation night and fell promptly to sleep. I, however, stayed up reading a bit later and started hearing a whistling sound. It drove me nuts the rest of the night. I seriously thought I was going crazy cause my husband slept right through it. So I mentioned it to him the next morning and at the conclusion of our day at sea, he started hearing it too. He was able to sleep through it though and I was so exhausted from not sleeping I eventually fell asleep. The next morning before heading off the boat to go on our Ruins tour, we called guest services and asked them to send someone to look at the balcony door, as that's where the sound was coming from. They promised to send someone. That night, nothing till the wee hours of the morning, around 3am it started up again. I called guest services again. They said they'd send maintenance after 8am and again, we were out of the cabin all day so they had ample time look at things. We got off and enjoyed a nice day at Harvest Caye. This was now Day 4. That night, the whistling was really loud and in full affect by 9pm. We complained again, they sent poor Wayne, who looked like he was just hearing about the issue and assured us he'd tell his supervisor. Shortly afterwards a maintenance guy showed up and he tried what he could to use some kind of tape to fix the seal around the door (which the faster the boat went, the more it whistled). He got the pitch of the noise to change and advised he'd have to take apart the door and completely re-do the rubber seal. He really tried his best, but at 1030 at night couldn't do it in the dark. We stuffed towels around the "lock" on the sliding door to muffle the sound the rest of the night. The next day was day 5, Honduras. We didn't have plans off-shore and needed to leave so maintenance could take apart our door. We settled into the Sunset Bar to read for the morning after breakfast, as he'd just started work. 2 hours later I swung by the cabin to grab something and found the maintenance guy standing outside our cabin with his tools. I asked how the work was going and he said our neighbor had complained about the noise he was making and so he was waiting for them to leave their cabin to do the work. This was around 11am and We'd already been outside the cabin for 3 hours waiting. So I went to guest services in person and explained, twice, my issue to the lady there. She took a while to understand that 1. this has been an issue we've complained about since day 2, 2. I wasn't sleeping as a result, and 3. the maintenance guy was just there and we HAD to have this fixed today or get moved to a cabin so i could sleep. Of note, the maintenance guy had to do the same repair on another door about 6-8 cabins down from ours. She didn't quite get that I wasn't asking for maintenance to look at it, I just needed them to do something to make sure our neighbors (who on day 5 we'd still never seen exiting or entering their cabin) would let the work get completed at some point that day. They assured me they'd take care of it, and when we next went to the room, around 2ish, the maintenance guy was gone. No note or status report was given. That night, the whistling was gone. I slept wonderfully. Day 6, when we got back from shore in Cozumel, there was a plate of 4 chocolate covered strawberries (yum!) and a bottle of Merlot (santa catalina from Chile) with simply a card that said "compliments of guest services" so we assume this was our "apology" for the issues. That night the whistling started again but was much softer and a towel stuck around the "lock" area muffled it enough to get us through night 6. Day 7 was our last at sea day. It was rainy so we tried to stay in our cabin, but the AC kept turning off every 15 minutes, leaving the room uncomfortably stuffy. The 2 other cabins in our party had the same issue, no AC would run for more than 15 minutes then the thermostat would go back to "neutral". This jogged our memory of this issue on our other day at sea, but we'd been out of the cabin most of the day so it wasn't an issue. That night though, my husband couldn't sleep because he was so hot and we couldn't keep the air down.

Port Reviews

Harvest Caye

Enjoyed relaxing by the pool in lounge chairs, a quick dip in the ocean. We then went to the little village on mainland and got some nice craft jewelry & a lovely wood carving.

Roatan

I'd recommend you book a excursion through the boat or from a vendor immediately off the ship. 3 of our party did south shore zip line for much cheaper and enjoyed it a lot booking off the boat at the time. The port is surrounded by sketchy looking men who want to sell things or take you places. My husband and I planned on this being our "down-time day" to experience boat stuff.
