Pre- cruise: My husband and I (early 60's) started off our cruise vacation by staying one night at the Holiday Inn Express on 17th St. in Fort Lauderdale. I give the hotel 3 stars. I found the room acceptable but my husband felt it was worn. I think it was the carpeting. There was only one (very slow) elevator. Breakfast was poor and we ate at Einstein’s, the bagel place, across the road. The hotel has been adding a new wing since at least last year and no progress seems to have been made. This means entrance to the hotel is detoured. This hotel uses Ace Tours as a shuttle service to get from The Holiday Inn Express in Ft. Lauderdale to the cruise ship terminal at $8/person. It should have been a 10-15 minute direct drive at the most. We ended up on a bus with people from 8 ships. It took ONE HOUR to get to our ship and there were still people on the bus. The driver was inefficient. I called to complain and was given the explanation that they didn't know how many cruise terminals they would have to go to and told me that they would not use one van per ship to expedite the drive. So….. save yourself aggravation and pay the little extra to take a direct cab ride to your terminal.

Cruise - We were on the Celebrity Silhouette leaving January 14, 2018 cruise to the eastern Caribbean. Getting on the ship was quite slow even though we had Concierge status (which we inadvertently booked). Our status, however, allowed us to eat in the dining room instead of fighting with the crowd in the Oceanview Cafe, which was a bonus. We got a free bottle of champagne (we don’t drink) and declined free fruit every day since we could get it at the buffet. I did find the snuggly bathrobes handy, however.

Cabin: Our balcony cabin had nice touches such as lounge chairs with footrests on the balcony and a love seat in our cabin. As shorter people, we found that the cabin lacked easy-to-reach storage space for our clothes as there was limited cabinet drawers. We managed to fit everything in, however, by using the less convenient over the bed storage space. The bathroom, on the other hand, had ample storage for our needs. Our cabin attendant, Joy was efficient, accommodating, pleasant and kept our room tidy and clean.

Concierge Class 1

Cabin C1

The cabin was small but serviceable. The major issue was storage for folded clothes. There were three drawers by the desk/freeze/safe and two cubbies over the bed. My husband is short and had to stand on the bed to get his clothes (mine where in the good drawers).

I really liked the footrests on the balcony. It makes sitting in the chairs more comfortable. The bathroom had lots of storage (for us, I don't wear make-up) and ample space since we are short and small (at the beginning of the cruise anyway).

Port Reviews

Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

17th St. is a great area to stay prior to the cruise, with lots of inexpensive shops, Walgreens, Dollar Store and restaurants to choose from. You can take a water taxi ($22/person) by the Hilton and get off and on at about 10 stops. We loved doing this on our last trip.

San Juan

We love San Juan. The forts are awesome. The shops are great. It is a beautiful city.

St. Croix

This port was hit hard by the hurricane and there is nothing much to see or do besides the beach.

Antigua

The infrastructure here is terrible. Awful sidewalks. If you have mobility issues I highly recommend taking an excursion and not walking around.

Grenada

The infrastructure here is terrible. Awful sidewalks. If you have mobility issues I highly recommend taking an excursion and not walking around. People are very pushy here.

Barbados

We've been here before and enjoyed it. Unfortunately it rained when we were about to walk around so we went back on the ship. It promptly stopped raining. Oh well, we had fun eating.

St. Lucia

St. Lucia has much better sidewalks than many of the other islands. Lots of kiosks just past the bridge.
