It was to be our second Celebrity cruise; the first being on the Reflection a year ago. We loved the Celebrity experience and despite being Platinum on another line, we decided to jump ship to Celebrity. The amenities, food, service, decor, other passengers, activities, etc. really sold us on Celebrity.
We knew going into our cruise on the Summit that some things would be different due to the ship layout, age, etc. We knew the Persian gardens and thermal suite would be smaller and there would be fewer specialty restaurants and smaller cabins, balconies etc. We were not expecting the tremendous drop in quality of service that we experienced between the Reflection and the Summit.
Check in in San Juan was breeze and we were on the ship in no time. Big win there. The cabin wasn't ready yet and that's ok.. expected since we were on the ship at lunch.
The ship is smaller and more dated for sure. Not really a big deal. But the shortcomings became evident in other places. First, the shower was dingy and not very clean. Mold in the grout, in corners, hard to reach places and pink mold in the jets on the vertical nozzles (we were in Aqua class). We found out that our cabin steward had been on vacation so we figured we'd give him a chance to get it right. Again, no big deal, just not up to Celebrity standards.
The main reasons we choose Aqua class are: Blu, thermal spa and a nice balcony. Balcony was small (ok, M-class ship, so we'll let that go). Thermal spa was small, again M-class, but we ended up never using it because the thing we like most are the tile recliners. Again, new that going into it, but missed it nonetheless. We did appreciate the thassalotherapy pool on the Summit, but only used it once. Blu however was a baffling ordeal. Lots of confusion at the hostess stand, not once, not twice but nearly every meal. Water never poured in a timely manner, or bread not being brought w/o asking or both or neither. The maitre'd and hostess (who was clueless) were both very nice. She didn't seem to have any idea what she was doing. We were strangers to her every time we showed up.
The room never got any cleaner, we never got a second robe, the afternoon snacks were not up to standard (one day it was some pickles, potato chips, yep, potato chips, and some cheese), we never got our bottle of champagne (not necessary, but missed).
For the most part the staff was always friendly and helpful. Blu was just "off."
We did miss our stop in Nassau due to bad weather and the crew rose to the occasion; staffing the dining rooms, bars, casino, etc.
Entertainment: Three Tenors we'd seen before, good voices, terrible show, but many like it. The impressionist was good but material severely dated ("the kids today are always asking me to do Adam Sandler.." um, no, they're not).. "Sound Track"... a few of the singers were good, but one was so bad we had to leave. Well, you get the picture.
Hats off to Arie in Cellar Masters and Roman in the casino. They both stood out to us on this cruise. And Captain Kate is a gem. A credit to Celebrity. Also the activities guys, Manuel, Mulvey & Patrick all were very good.
We will cruise Celebrity again, but not on an Mclass ship. Too small, too dated and too many things just not up to standard.
Cabin was small and tired. Shower wasn't very clean, also very small, water ran everywhere all the time. Balcony wasn't clean at first (cabin steward resolved that).
