One of my Brazilian friends was amazed by this itinerary and told me we went to places few Brazilians ever see. The trip had many highlights, but we were especially moved by the people of Parentins, Brazil on Christmas Day. It felt like the whole town welcomed us, giving up their own holiday. The performance of Boi Bamba was indescribable--nothing I could write would do justice to the singing, dancing, costumes, and sets. We have seen some amazing shows all over the world, but nothing as stunning and exciting as Boi Bamba. Our visit to an agricultural farm in Santarem on Christmas Eve afternoon--another included excursion--provided opportunities to learn about production processes and taste many products of the area, again with a warm welcome from the local people. For our second day in Manaus, we chose a boat ride further up the Rio Negro to an indigenous village, where we learned about the history and culture, sampled the food, and experienced the dances linked to various events and functions.
As always on Viking ocean cruises, the ship was beautiful and comfortable, with all the extra touches (e.g., heated bathroom floors), and the food was delicious. We particularly enjoyed the " destination" menu choices each evening that we were in port.
