Golden Princess Cruise Review by elizabethcruiser
The fact that the itinerary was changed was never communicated to us by Princess i found out a week before the cruise because of a post on cruise critic, my travel agent did not inform me of the change either. Embarkation was really smooth with no hold-ups. I was surprised that passengers from forward cabins were allocated to the Canaletto dining room at the rear of the ship which seemed smaller than donatello or maybe it was because we were seated in the middle area not near any windows. Also in this dining room you did not hear any of the P.A. announcements, but on the plus side our waiters were very good. Had an issue with drinks package that was pre-booked as was charged more than the charge on board, but once i raised the issue the extra amount I had paid was refunded to my on board account. Our cabin steward was outstanding and so helpful. Cabin location on Lido deck maybe was not the best choice on a cruise during school holidays as the teen area was on deck 15 and a lot of noise traveled down the stairway that we were near particularly at night, other noise such as movies under the stars was not an issue. The new bed was great we both found it comfortable where usually the bed would not suit both of us, the television was old and when you tried to change channel it either had no sound or was extremely loud, the channel offerings were not very varied and the program guide is on the TV and only for the current day. I was told that the TVs are all going to be replaced when the ship is fitted for the ocean medallion system in March this year.. Unfortunately the forward pool next to the salon was closed/emptied on a few days and the other pools were extremely crowded/noisy. Daytime movies under the stars were impossible to watch due to all the noise. There is still a severe lack of seating near the atrium and international cafe, so sitting down and relaxing with a coffee and listening to the entertainers was not easy. Mostly we ate in the dining room for breakfast and lunch and the service and range was very good. There did not seem to be as many enrichment lectures on this cruise. (had previously cruised to New Zealand from Melbourne) The only area that we had any problems with service was at the guest services desk, and it was all dependent on which staff member served you, Did book shore tours privately as well as through princess, which all ran smoothly. There was a major issue in Auckland when all the passengers wanted to get off so long queue and not very well organised but this was rectified by wellington where they did a better system giving out tickets for the shuttles and disembarking guests in groups. We went to both of the specialty restaurants and they were both well worth the cover charge and the food was perfect in both Sabatinis and the crown grill In places the ship is looking a bit tired and some of the furnishings are looking very worn. Have been on this cruise line before and had looked forward to the happy hour but this no longer happens. Unfortunately they still take up the explorers lounge for most of the day when they have the art auctions. Disembarkation was not too bad and well organised.
