A chance to see and experience the amazing Amazon was the draw. The boat, the food, the cabin, the on board service - and the Amazon River - was excellent. FIRST CLASS.
The on shore tours were generally mediocre. While this was Viking's first time in the Amazon - IT SHOWED. Not even close to our experience on other Viking tours. (One big exception was the outstanding local pageant in Parentis. That was exceptional. The rest left much to be desired.)
Many of the local guides were not at all fluent in English. The "Included" tour in Belem was a "march to hell". Virtually no commentary while walking (understandable, because we ran). Pleas to "slow down, you have a group of seniors" went unheeded.
The shipboard lectures, however were top draw... as I would have expected from Viking.
We took the Viking Montreal to NYC cruise last year. The experience was excellent. That is why we signed up for the Amazon. A real disappointment.
The experience vs cost makes me seriously question another Viking Ocean cruise
