  3. Celebrity Eclipse
We have sailed numerous times on Celebrity since 2012. While we believe Celebrity offers a very good cruise experience, their cost cutting is evident and is impacting the customer experience. Where we experienced this the most was with bar service. Since Celebrity offers their classic drink package as a promotion it seems most guests have a drink package. Therefore, the bar has become a cost center versus a revenue center for Celebrity. That seems to have resulted in them taking action to reduce the cost of alcoholic beverages. We experienced sommeliers only offering wines at the bottom end of the package. We had to press to get better wine within the package limits. There also was a noticeable reduction in bar servers in lounges and in the MDR at breakfast. This resulted in more people crowding the bar to get a drink. Overall we believe the package is a good value and the service is adequate but diminished from what we experienced in the past. The embarkation process in Miami was efficient. Took us about 20 minutes from luggage drop to being on board the ship. Disembarkation was also efficient but fairly chaotic on the curb trying to find your transportation. The Eclipse is in good shape. The public areas are well kept and people cleaning and caring for the ship was evident throughout the cruise. We were in stateroom 8207 - a veranda stateroom. Room was clean and had plenty of storage for us. Our stateroom attendant was friendly and efficient in honoring our requests and servicing the room twice a day. We experienced some service problems in the MDR at breakfast the first few days. It often took longer than usual to be served danish or the get fresh juice. Waiters and assistant waiters in the MDR were efficient but no very engaging. Special requests were accommodate as long as they had the item on the ship. The attendants in the restrooms in the evening is a nice touch - especially for the ladies. We found a bit of variability among the bartenders in terms of how they made a drink - especially margaritas. (Frankly, it is impossible to get a great margarita on Celebrity since the bars do not stock fresh lime juice) Special note for those with the classic alcohol package when getting a drink at the Martini Bar. Even if the liquor you want is included in the classic package, and all you want is a plain martini, they will charge you extra. If you go to any other bar you will get the martini at no added charge. For me it meant having to walk to another bar, get my drink, and carry it back in order to sit with my wife who ordered a fancy martini. No flexibility on this. If you are a craft beer fan you will be disappointed on Eclipse. They stock exactly two IPA's, one is a mass produced that is poor and the other is Dogfish Head 90 which is very good but they ran out of it with 7 days left in the cruise. They do not have any other craft beer. Celebrity needs to fix this. We enjoyed the food in the MDR and found starters and mains that we enjoyed everyday. Beef wellington and Chateaubriand were excellent. Unfortunately, fish seems to always be over cooked and dry. Food in the Oceanview cafe is hit-and-miss. The custom stir-fry at lunch is very good as is the fish-n-chips. Fruit was excellent especially the pineapple and whole oranges. The oatmeal they serve at breakfast is horrible unless you want gruel. The production shows were very good but guest entertainers were hit-and-miss. The magician/comedian should have stuck to magic and strung his tricks back-to-back. He would try to be funny between tricks and it made the show terrible. The house band and other musical entertainers did a nice job. Only criticism is that Celebrity usually schedules them to perform for only 45 minutes. Would be nice if they would play in one location longer. We came the closest to missing the ship on this trip while in St Lucia. Made it by 10 minutes. Be very careful if you hire your own tour of the island. We hired a tour to Soufriere with a company promoting just outside the terminal. Our all aboard was at 4:30 and we asked multiple times when the tour would return and were told between 3-3:30, which is what we wanted. Due to others on the tour with mobility issues it took longer at every stop and we fell behind. On the return we hit the outskirts of Castries at 3:40 and traffic was gridlocked. It took 40 minutes to go the last 2 km. If you want an island tour of St Lucia I suggest booking through the ship. We snorkeled in Bonaire with the Sea Cow and found it to be very good. Crew was fun and saw a lot of interesting sea life. We did a sunset cocktail cruise in Aruba booked through Celebrity and conducted by Pelican. The boarding process was inefficient and took longer than needed as they had two boats going out. Crew was OK but didn't do much to engage guest. Liquor used in drinks was very cheap and wasn't very good. Sunset was great and the sail they sailed past the ship that was all lit up which was cool. Given this cruise is 14 days most guests are retired and older. We had two medical issues on board. One required divert to San Juan which resulted in 2 hour delay arriving in St Thomas. However, we then stayed 2 hours later so the total time in port was the same. The second did not impact the itinerary. Overall, this was a very good cruise and I would do it again.

Cabin Review

Deluxe Veranda
Cabin 1B 8207
Good location. Close to front stairway and elevators. Room has ample storage and was clean and comfortable. Your view forward on the veranda is impeded somewhat but is adequate.
