My husband and I wanted to go somewhere together and chose Carnival Freedom based on its affordability and (at the time) 4.5/5.0 rating on Cruise Critic. What a joke. I'm not sure how it has such a high rating. Luckily the stops in Belize and Roatan were redeeming highlights for our trip, otherwise it would have been a complete waste of time and money. The ship decor is that of some cheap, seedy 1980s motel. None of the staff/crew look happy to be there at all and the best crew do the bare minimum in terms of customer service, others were flat out rude. The food in the restaurants for dinner is hit or miss on quality. Most of the other food on the Lido deck is not any better than hospital food that I've had. Even the frozen yogurt machines were hit or miss. Some were frozen, others weren't, some had more of one ingredient or another. The burritos from Blue Iguana were ok, but nothing to write home about. The comedy at the Punchliner was really funny, so that was a good point in our bad Carnival experience. The bed was hard as a rock. Also, the advertised "king" bed, is NOT a king. It is a queen size. More specifically, it's two undersized twin beds pushed together. When you wake up in the morning one person may be stuck in the gap that forms overnight. While choppy seas are not Carnival's fault, one night during our cruise the sea was so choppy that things were falling off tables. Instead of making an announcement to let anyone know what was going on or to make any commentary on the condition of the weather, the captain said nothing. No one knew an estimate of when we would be out of the bad weather, if we were safe, nothing. There were many other issues with things being broken in our room and despite reporting the issues multiple times and being told someone would be down to fix things, no one came. In fact, a person at Guest Services was super rude to my husband when he asked if we could get our mini-fridge fixed. I would not recommend this ship and possibly even this entire cruise line to anyone. I would highly recommend steering clear.
