This was a Christmas cruise and the ship was sold out. I traveled with my 90-year-old mother. The itinerary was Haiti, Jamaica, and Cozumel with 2 at sea days. Since we live in Florida and tend to get away at Christmas, I did not find the itinerary that exciting but I will cover the shore excursions later.

This was my first Royal Caribbean line cruise. I have previously been on Holland America, Carnival, and Norwegian cruise lines. As with anything I do, I researched RC heavily. I read things about poor maintenance, poor service, awful food, and lousy rooms. I can truly say I did NOT encounter any of those things.

Maintenance: Just what you want from a cruise line.

Cabin Review

Superior Ocean View Stateroom with Balcony

Cabin D2

This room is located in the center of the ship. The seventh deck makes it very convenient to everything. You can go down one deck to the spa or two decks down to the Promenade. Or go up one deck for the Central park of the boardwalk. Or you head to the back of the ship for the dining rooms and theater. The only “bad” thing about this deck is it is split in the front of the ship. This means if you happen to get on the elevator on the port side and get off on the 7th deck, you either have to go up and down one deck to get to the starboard side or walk all the way around. I did this so many times you would think I had it down after a few times. No. I still messed up on the 6th day.

The cabin was a typical cramped balcony cabin where if one person stands at the vanity mirror, you cannot get by. As others have said, in the bathroom the sink is too small. However, there definitely was lots of storage space with an incredible array of cubby holes. My mother always brings a huge suitcase and it was so big it did not fit under the bed. Grrr.

I seemed to get a shower much early than other people on. Two days in a row I ended up taking a lukewarm shower. I knew hot water came out at other times so I checked with the steward to make sure I had the water control turned correctly, then let it run a full 5 minutes until the water was blissfully hot. So note, if there is no hot water let it run while you do something else. The water will get eventually get hot.

I really like that when you have the bathroom light off, the lights go “low” lighting. This means you don’t need a nightlight in the bathroom. I usually bring battery-powered candles for a night light but did not need them.

There is also a low light switch that we would keep to light the room at night. The light is blue and lights up the paintings. In my opinion, there was just this side of too bright for a nightlight. But I quibble.

I loved the balcony. I did not want a view of the Boardwalk or Central Park, which I have heard is noisy, so I am glad we did an outside balcony. It was wonderfully peaceful and quiet. We were on the starboard side, and it was fascinating to watch the ship dock in Jamaica. Huge ship, small dock. Amazing.
