Norwegian failed its customers on this cruise -- let me count the ways: 1) offered locals in San Juan a discount that was not only fair to its regular fare paying customers but most likely cost NCL money. I realize filling cabins is the goal and this is standard procedure for various cruise lines sailing in/out of San Juan. But $300-400 dollars for inside cabins, allowing 4-6 people per cabin, while others paid $2-$4K/pp was not/is not fair. It also created an extremely unpleasant experience for the more experienced traveler and/or anyone with basic social manners and awareness because the passenger list was heavily weighted with the less than experienced and generally good mannered traveler; 2) NCL allowed passengers to bring and play their personal music at their dinner tables, the pool, and Atrium!! These passengers consumed every space on the ship and were unaware and disinterested in anyone else trying to make their way through the deck hallways, pool deck pathways, the buffet (!!you would think some people have never eaten in public or shared space with others!), getting on or off elevators became an almost push and shove experience and just overall general courtesies did not exist for the majority of these passengers. The blocking of deck / public hallways was not only an annoyance but a safety issue; 3) Excursion offerings were lacking and the few we booked through the ship the vendors were less than customer oriented. After the first 3 islands excursion experience, we ventured out on our own. Excursion desk - not helpful or courteous; 5) Witnessed a lead restaurant manager publicly reprimanding a server - BAD FORM!; 5) The Good: the NCL staff, especially the bar, casino and restaurant staff were excellent. Except for the Garden Cafe' and Cagney's Steakhouse, the food was excellent. The drinks and drink offerings were also excellent. Also enjoyed the itinerary and the little Christmas touches, e.g., caroling, Santa Claus, playing old Christmas movies, etc.. You can't beat spending Christmas in the Caribbean but don't sail out of San Juan with NCL.
