Emerald Princess and Grand Princess at anchor in Cabo San Lucas
Typical street scene in Lima. Took 10 hour tour. 7 hours of it was spent

South America was one of the last places on our to-cruise list. Was a mini-disaster.

The ship was packed with rude people. Lines everywhere for everything. Loud people. Line jumpers. Angry, politically intense people with election-night hangovers ready for a fight. Hall running kids. Hallway blockers slowly and aimlessly walking, weaving back and forth, arm-in-arm down hallways. A zillion scooters driven by food-crazed grossly overweight people going back and forth to the buffet.

The weather was cloudy, chilly, and rainy forcing people inside where they clogged up every hallway.

Port Reviews

Buenos Aires

They say Buenos Aires is the Paris of South America. Totally agree. Went on 4 hour Free Walking Tour of downtown area. Lots of buses and a great subway system. The best part of the entire cruise. Could have spent 3 or 4 days there easily.

Montevideo

Took a Free Walking Tour of the old part of Montevideo. Lots of trash and graffiti.

Stanley

Stanley only has 3,500 people living there. Not a big touristy place. But they have penguins. We took a $20 ride out to a cove and walked a trail (crowded) along a penguin rookery. Really interesting. Advise that you study the Falkland War history a bit before visiting.

Santiago (Valparaiso)

Took a local bus to Santiago ($6 each way) and joined a Free Walking Tour of the downtown area. Very good tour. Good subways and bus transportation throughout city.

Lima

Traffic, traffic and more traffic. Endless waiting. Crowded. Felt unsafe during the entire visit. The city water park is a must see, particularly at night. The Indian Market is a colorful, interesting tourist trap.
