We chose this cruise due to the itinerary, season and because we love Viking Ocean and River Cruises. Unfortunately, this particular cruise did not meet our expectations. This was a first time for Viking in the Amazon and will most likely be their last if comments among fellow travelers is any indication. We got off to a bad start when a much-anticipated port call in French Guiana was cancelled. Most passengers had paid exorbitant prices to obtain yellow fever shots just to be able to disembark at this port. Later stops at Santarém, Parintins and Manaus we less interesting than anticipated. At one we had filthy unairconditioned busses! In Manuas we paid an extraordinary amount for short jungle experiences. No words can describe the heat at filth in Belém, our final Brazilian port. As for the ship itself it is beautifully appointed and comfortable with lovely staterooms and public areas. The entertainment was better than on most Viking cruises, but the service was a disappointment. Obviously, Viking has trimmed staff to a minimum and while all were friendly and courteous, the usual Viking level of service was lacking, particularly in the Restaurant. Also, the spa was not kept free of used towels and dirty dishes were left throughout the ship, cabin service was, as usual, perfect. It seems to us that Viking has grown too fast and that what made it unique has been sacrificed in the process. Will be travel with Viking again? Yes, one more try but probably a river cruise.
