This was a new itinerary for Viking and we took a chance. Quite a few hiccups. A late arriving "container" in Barbados which caused us to leave late and then we had to forgo our scheduled stop in French Guiana. A yellow fever vaccine was required for this stop. We already had ours but many did not and they had to scramble before the cruise to find the vaccine and pay a high price.
We were late arriving in the last Amazon stop, Belem because we had to turn around and let off a sick couple. I did not get off at this stop because it was so hot and humid.
Viking tried hard on their first trip down this river but they really need to listen to passenger feedback and make a lot of changes for it to be a success in the future.
Cabin was excellent as usual. Large enough to unpack completely and put all suitcases under the bed. Nice sized bathroom with good sized shower. Lots of cubbies, shelves and drawers to stow toiletries. Cabin stewards were their usual excellent selves, giving twice a day service automatically. I used the laundry service twice, it is reasonably priced and came back before the scheduled time in a beautiful box.
Room service was prompt and there is no additional charge or gratuity required.
We did the piranha fishing. It started out as a leisurely ferry ride small enough to get into the inlets. Then the gun started. You are given a baited fishing line to throw over. 5 people caught piranhas. The guide was excellent and explained about the fish and its teeth. This was a catch and release.
