This was a double treat! We celebrated our anniversary during the cruise, and checked the Panama Canal off my bucket list! Booking the Aft Penthouse on the Star was the best decision we made. We were able to see all the workings of the locks from our own balcony, seeing the gates of the locks, not the walls, while we sipped mimosas and snacked on sandwiches and snacks provided by Chris, our attentive butler. We are not used to being treated like royalty, but splurging on this cruise was the right decision. We had reservations for dinner every night, either at Cagne's, La Cuchina, Le Bistro, or the Versailles main dining room. Only La Cuchina failed to impress. The Concierge, Monica, made sure all the reservations were made, and changed, as we desired. Paul, our cabin steward, made sure everything was arranged quietly and professionally. The suite was roomy, with lots of storage space, full bathtub with shower, and spectacular views of the wake trailing behind the ship. There was music throughout the ship every evening, and the shows were first rate, except for one comedian who went into areas that were not suitable for the children in the audience, and for the adults who did not agree with his amoral world view. We were limited in the shore excursions we booked. We mostly took advantage of walking around the towns on our own, but the couple we went on were informative, although rushed. We probably won't cruise the canal again, as there are so many other destinations on the bucket list, but this cruise was all we expected it to be!

Aft-Facing Penthouse with Large Balcony

Cabin SF

The absolute right choice for a 2 week cruise including the Panama Canal. I set up my iPad on the balcony and got a time lapse movie of most of the canal before a torrential thunderstorm forced me to take if from its spot. Got more than half, though.

Port Reviews

Cartagena (Colombia)

We shared a taxi into town with another couple, very crowded with 3 in the small back seat. There were 3 ships in port, so the taxi mafia had all the cabs lined up to give "all day tours," and we had to go to the independent cabs who were not in the line. Leader was not happy. Cost $20 for the trip to the old city. We walked around, and saw many of the old churches, and the fortification walls facing the sea. We had to return to the ship by 1:30, so it was a short visit. Many cabs jockeying for business to take us back to the ship for $15. Wish we would have had more time.

Corinto

The tours were 45 minutes late leaving the ship, even though we arrived on time. That put everything off schedule. The first (major) stop was at the historic Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. We were there on the Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception, and due to our late start, arrived to a packed church celebrating Mass in a big way, including fireworks outside the church every time the choir was heard from the loudspeakers outside the church. The guide cautioned us not to walk around and take pictures during mass. the church was beautiful, and we were disappointed, but as Catholics, we were gratified to be able to attend Mass on the Feast Day. We walked around the town near the pier after the tour. There were many stalls set up in the square selling items, but I believe they were there for the local celebration of the Feast, not for the tourists on the ship.

Cabo San Lucas

We had booked a sailboat cruise to celebrate our anniversary, but the wife took sick the day before, and we were only able to spend a little time near the tender dock shopping. We did find a few bargains, though. It was our last chance to get Christmas presents.

Puerto Quetzal (Antigua)

Just walked around the shopping area near the pier.

Puntarenas (Puerto Caldera)

We just walked into the town.
