  3. Grandeur of the Seas
My wife and I went on the 12 day December 9th voyage to the Carribean. We stayed at the Best Western hotel in Elkridge, Maryland the night before. We selected this hotel because they have a program where they take you and pick you up from the ship and let you keep your car over the length of the cruise as long as you stay one night. The price of the hotel was about the same as parking at the pier. Below is my analysis of our cruise: Embarkment was delayed because there was a neuro virus on the previous cruise and the crew had to sterilize it before we boarded. Once we were allowed to board the process was quick and seamless Cabin - We stayed in outside Cabin 3060. Although the cabin was small, it was very comfortable. There was plenty of storage space. Our luggage fit under the bed after we lifted the beds. One was placed in the closet. I recommend that you bring soft sided luggage. There are three 110 outlets, two by the desk and one for a shaver in the bathroom as well as two 220 outlets. I recommend that you bring an extension cord if you want to charge more than 2 items. The bathroom is small especially the shower. The shower did have good water pressure. The bed, configured as a king, was very comfortable. Two king size mattress pads were placed on the bed so you don’t feel the separated beds. The cabin was very quiet and we did not feel the ship’s motion. The cabin steward kept the cabin clean and made cute animal figures. Television – The TV is flat screen. The tv stations could have been better. There were 5 stations related to the ship and RCI. However, channel 14 was good in that it had the daily morning show with Big Bob(Cruise Director) and Tornado Tanya (Assistant Cruise Director). There was no indication on any of the cruise channels of the current temperature or weather condition. There was one prime time station which showed the same reruns constantly. They had CNN international which reported very little US news. However FOX News was broadcasted with much more US news. TNT, TRU and TBS was broadcasted in Spanish, but the shows were in English with no Spanish subtitles, but commercials and promos were in Spanish (how weird). There were a couple of children’s stations as well as sports. Dining – We ate breakfast mainly in the Windjammer because of the delicious made to order omelets. The fruit was also delicious as well as the hash browns. In the dining room they offered a fruit, cold cereal and meat bar which was very good. For lunch we mainly ate at the café in the Solarium. They had a delicious fresh carved roast beef sandwich with gravy every day as well as pre-made sandwiches and desserts. They also had made to order salads. We ate dinner every night in the Main Dining room. The food there was excellent. There was always something different each night. There was one lobster night and two formal nights. Our wait staff, Antonio and Loxley, was great and very accommodating. Shows – There was either a production show or a headliner every night. There was also one adult late night show. The production shows were good but could use some updating to more contemporary music. The Tango show was boring but well executed. Most of the headliners were very good. There was one violinist which was unbelievable. The singer was amazing. The comedians for the most part were good. There was one Magician/comedian which was awful. He told cliché type jokes and performed very little magic. The magic was something you would see at a kid’s party. The ship’s orchestra, singers and dancers were great. Game shows – The game shows and competitions were very good especially the Quest and the Sexiest Man. Pool – The configuration of the pool area is great. We were able to sit in the outside pool area and use the adults only pool located in the Solarium. We were always able to find a lounge chair at the outside pool, but had some trouble in the Solarium. There are four hot tubs in the outside pool area, two for kids and two for adults. In the Solarium there are two hot tubs and one pool. The pool was never very crowded. RCI now has a policy where lifeguards are on duty at all pools which keeps the kids from jumping in the hot tubs and pool. Music – Most of the music was in the Centrum. The house band, Celebration, played mostly easy listening music. There was a fantastic guitar and violin dual (Rosario Strings) and the pool band was great. There was also a piano player which was a typical lounge act. They Grandeur should have a rock band playing contemporary music.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Island tour
The tour guide was very imformative. The van was very comfortable with air conditioning.

The volcano itself was very interesting. They showed us a movie, and had an exhibit explaining volcanos in general. It was breathtaking being inside an actual volcano. We made a stop at a restaurant which had an amazing view of the Pitons. The tour guide was very informative and friendly and the van was comfortable with air conditioning. I would have given this excursion a 5 rating except for the first stop where vendors were very aggressive.

  • St. Maarten
We were scheduled to take the See and Sea excursion which was on the French side of the island. They were hit badly by the hurricanes and are in the process of rebuilding to ensure that the next hurricane won't inflict extensive damage. They cruise line cancelled 14 excursions. This should not have been a port for this cruise.

  • Magen Bay Beach
Time at the beach was limited to 2 hours. Would have liked at least another hour. The trees have been uprooted by the hurricanes and they are in the process of replanting.
