This was our second Panama Canal cruise. A bucket list must for many. It was our sixth cruise on NCL. My wife and I enjoy the casual atmosphere on NCL compared to others we have been on. The Star is a smaller ship but we found it to be a good size for us. The staff was very friendly and fun to be around. We particularly enjoyed our time in O'Sheehan's bar and grill. The Captain did a good job of informing us each day of the ships progress. Giving us information on the weather, location, etc but he also gave us the history of each port. He showed a great sense of humour during his Q & A's sessions with the cruisers. We have always enjoyed the quality and variety of entertainment on NCL but we found on this cruise it to be a hit and miss. This did not deter us from having a wonderful time. We enjoyed our ports of call. Doing our own tours and using NCL only for the bus drop in Guatemala. The food was average to good. Being Platinum members we were able to have two free speciality restaurant dinners. We enjoyed Le Bistro but found the meal in La Cucina to be too salty. The Cruise Next staff was wonderful under the leadership of Christina. We know her from previous cruises. We believe it to be a good deal to make a future cruise deposit while on board if you plan on cruising again.

Cabin Review

Inside

Cabin IC

We chose a guarantee inside cabin this time and we were lucky to get a great location. Although we have had balcony and window cabins we like the inside cabins best. The value and darkness is great and allows us to take more cruises. We usually pick our cabin but this time we took a chance and it worked out.

Port Reviews

Cartagena (Colombia)

We have been here before and took a tour. This time we just stayed in the port area and did some shopping and used the wifi.

Corinto

A very poor town with not much to do for the tourists. There was a market set up on the main street the day we were in town. The people were very friendly and happy. We had lots of kids saying Hola to us with smiles on their faces.

Puerto Quetzal (Antigua)

Took the NCL bus to town and did the On your Own Tour. Saw the market and found a great hotel with a restaurant and had the best chicken quesadilla ever. (Restaurant Del Arco)

Acapulco

Walked from the cruise ship to see the cliff divers perform. It was a good show for $7 US and it came with a beer. Found out the Fort Museum was closed on Monday except for booked tours.

Cabo San Lucas

We have been here several times before so this time we just walked around the city. My wife did some shopping. We then found a bar with wifi and had a beer.

Puntarenas (Puerto Caldera)

We did a 10 in 1 tour with Thumbs Up. Probably the best tour we have been on in years. Carlos was a wonderful guide and Junior an excellent drivers especially on the dirt mountain road. Saw lots of wildlife and had a great lunch which was included in the price of the tour.
