We picked this cruise because we had never been to Spain, Africa or the Islands. We also tied it into a 10 day pre-cruise tour of Spain on our own. We have cruised 10 times on a variety of smaller to mid-sized ships and prefer them to the newer floating cities. The reason for just an average rating is that there were numerous things that happened during the cruise that disappointed us counterbalanced by a few things we appreciated.

The itinerary is what sold us originally as was the price for an interior cabin. We didn't expect the opportunity to bid for an upgrade but participated and ended up in a balcony room for $500 more. Our room steward was wonderful but the room had its problems. We had luke-warm water for the first two days and a clogged sink too. When we mentioned it to him, he got a plumber in immediately and it was corrected. A few days later the toilet wouldn't flush and again, he called the plumber in to fix it. These issues should have been resolved before we occupied the room. There were many other annoyances including a remote that didn't work properly because it was blocked by the in-room refrigerator. There was a dearth of counter space, outside the small desk which had a coffee machine on it. I'll attribute it to being a 20 year old ship, but the room could have been rearranged to accommodate more counter space.

The same applies to the ship in general. The public spaces were either too spacious for the given activity or too cramped (Champagne Charlies for the Port Review for example). The few comfy couches in the atrium weren't enough. The chairs in the smoking lounge looked pretty comfortable though. What was missing was an atrium pool, for the colder days. We had one on the NCL Jewel. The Theater was usually packed for evening entertainment and early arrival was essential for a good seat. The shows were pretty standard ship fare, but the magician, acrobats and dancers were especially good.

problems with plumbing. lack of counter space but the bed was VERY comfortable. The fridge in the room seems totally unnecessary

Port Reviews

Casablanca

Highly recommend the trip to Rabat to visit the Casbah, Roman ruins, the mausoleum and Medina for a traditional Moroccan lunch.

Las Palmas (Gran Canaria)

Take public transportation down to the Columbus Museum and old town. Also walk from the port over to the beach with lots of restaurants and shops or go for a swim

Madeira (Funchal)

A beautiful garden Island. Lots to see and do, but not enough time. Check out the cable car ride. Buy a ticket for the Yellow bus and you can see all of Funchal for 16 euros!

Malaga

See the fort and the Alcazaba
