  3. Queen Mary 2 (QM2)
We can count ourselves as "seasoned" travellers and have been on many cruise ships. We love to dance and wanted to try the reportedly "biggest" ballroom at sea. We chose the Princess Grill cabin and had hoped for fine dining in the Grill Dining Room. This being our first sailing on a Cunard ship we did not know want to expect. But we had sailed on the new Britannia from Barbados and thoroughly enjoyed it, so we thought this British ship may be similar. Although the ship had been "refurbished" it was showing its age. The suite was nice and comfortable, and the cabin steward was most efficient and attentive. But we had no hot water on 2 evenings and taking a cold shower was impossible. They told us some pipes had "burst." We were unable to flush the toilet on a couple of occasions: we were told there was something wrong with the "vacuum" system. The WIFI was extremely slow: we spent about $600 on internet fees on a 12 night cruise. The food on this ship was surprisingly poor in taste and quality: most of our meals in the Grill Dining Room were bland, The fish dishes were miserable. We had to switch to meat and other varieties to get more "taste". But beef was usually tough and even the lobster was tough. We even went to the Kings Court buffet when we got fed up with the Grill Dining, but the buffet was worse. The Kings Court staff was a bunch of unhappy, unhelpful lot. Never served us tea or coffee: truly self-serve. The buffet lacked variety and quality, and always closed earlier than the designated time. But we had come to dance: so we could indeed forget the other negatives? The music was running from 7PM to midnight which was good for dancers. We did not get continuous dancing like this on other ships. The band and singer were good. But on most nights it was too crowded on the dance floor. And most disturbing was the fact people ignored the dress code: we saw guests wearing running shoes, tee shirts, short sleeve shirts: no jackets, no ties, no formal attire. What had happened to this "luxury" liner that used to observe the dress code????? We attended only 2 shows in the theatre: the production show was so poor that we could not put ourselves through another one. The planetarium was interesting. Unfortunately we are booked on the Queen Victoria in February 2018. We expect the food will be of the same bland and tasteless variety. We will never sail on the Queen Mary 2 again. One has a lot of options when you pay over $13000.
