Sail Date: Nov 2017

The Oriana is an elderly but pleasant ship with good lines. She looks good. She still retains the best of the original decoration of her designers, when she was the pride of the old P & O Company. She has good communal areas, with both principal and secondary show lounges, and a comfortable cinema. So given entertainment which suits your taste or interest, there are good venues to satisfy them.

Embarkation was standard, without too much waiting. The balcony cabin was pleasant enough, although there was little welcome - no bottle of wine, just two bottles of mineral water, a single bloom in a vase without water, two small and partly used shampoo and conditioner bottles sitting in the bath area, with two full ones beside the washbasin. And one small bar of soap.

It didn't matter but it reinforced our opinion that over a comparatively short period of time, little economies have been creeping forward. Our cabin steward did his job adequately, but we had to ask for things which hitherto would have been checked, such as soap, room service menus, and towels. None of this was important but it may indicate something.

Port Reviews

Catania

This was a pre-booked P & O esxcursion and it was worth it. For the Greek and Roman sites you need transport, and a visit to Syracuse is included, to visit the cathedral, one of the finest and oldest religious buildings anywhere.

Toulon

We had a terrorist warning for this port. That may perhaps be due to the presence in dry-dock of the Charles De Gaulle, the French Navy aircraft carrier. Security is very very tight because of that. Toulon is interesting if you like local ferry rides - you can do at least three destinations very cheaply if you like boat trips. Apart from that, not a lot to see in this large city apart from crumbling buildings and empty shops.

Valencia

Take the bus outside the port gates into the old city for 1.50 euros. Have a look around at this magnificent city for as along as you like. Then, if you are willing, walk back to the port along the old river bed. You will pass the wonderful new architecture, and when you have had enough, catch the bus 19 to the port gates for another 1.50 euros.
