  • Cabin Type: Inside Stateroom

We’ve previously cruised on 10 different ships across 6 different brands and we picked P&O this time due to value of such an itinerary at the price we paid as well as the fact that we are British with a currency in turmoil due to Brexit. As everything on the ship is priced in GBP, it took any worries out of any possible currency fluctuations.

We enjoyed our cruise immensely but not because of the Azura itself but more because the itinerary was so good and the weather was great. The islands we visited (9 in all) were all new ports to us and we loved nearly all of them....especially Antigua, St Kitts and St Lucia. Guadalupe was one exception.... the main port city you arrive at isn’t great as it’s in quite a state of disrepair and some taxi drivers were trying it on by quoting €50 per person to drive to a beach that probably wasn’t more than 20 minutes away vs other islands quoting $8 or so. So we didn’t bother going anywhere, which is a shame, as I don’t doubt that Guadalupe is probably nice away from the main city, but we didn’t get to see any of it due to greedy taxi drivers.

As for the Azura, it felt a bit old fashioned and a little tired to me. It was kept in good order as virtually all cruise ships are, but the decor was old fashioned imo especially since it was only built in 2010 and refurbished in 2015. We’ve been on a fair few different ships and most felt and were a lot more modern. The sea screen was a nice feature but was a bit knackered with lots of blocks of squares that make up the screen displaying at different shades to the rest so for watching football, it was ok’ish.... but for films, you couldn’t see any definition when there were dark scenes so a waste of time. The speakers were also blown so sounded really bad.

I also felt the aircon wasn’t cold enough in the main social areas or our cabin. We had it at its lowest setting but still felt warmer than it should. Not sure if there was a problem or whether the ships engineers set it like this?? But our main gripe was that the food wasn’t nearly as good as we’ve experienced on other ships. I can’t say it was really bad but I definitely can’t say it was great either.....except the pay for Beach House restaurant that was really nice. The guest entertainers were pretty good but the Headliners stage group weren’t and pretty much murdered every song we heard them sing.

We had a nice time and really needed a relaxing break....which the Caribbean delivered...but we have mixed feelings as regards the ship. To be fair, at the price we paid for the flights and itinerary we got, we can’t really complain. But we’ve been on much nicer ships with much better food and dare I say it, happier staff. We would sail with P&O again if the price and itinerary was right but they wouldn’t be our first choice....

Cabin Review

Inside Stateroom
Cabin OD C221

Nice enough and comfortable bed.....but dated decor and small tv with slow screen access to menu options like account charges etc. Looked like a retrofitted system to a small flatscreen as opposed to a properly designed entertainment unit.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

Barbados

Main city wasn’t great. Didn’t really see much else of Barbados but wished we had.

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata)

Actually better than I was expecting. Didn’t venture out into the Dominican Republic but maybe next time.

Antigua

Nice people, lovely beach, turquoise waters, cheap taxi fares, great port.....what more do you want?

St. Kitts (Port Zante)

Cleanest and most well kept island we visited. Again, great people, fantastic port...brilliant. Only slight downside was the beach we ended up at was really busy but hey ho, it’s not a problem.

Guadeloupe

Dirty and in a terrible state of disrepair port city and greedy taxit drivers.

St. Lucia

Took a boat to the Pitons alongside 10 others. Nice fellas taking the tour, lovely beach resort we ended up at....beautiful.

Martinique

Water taxi thing over to where some beaches were....nice, clear waters...loved it.

Grenada

Took another water taxi to a beach that was a little crowded but the water was lovely, the guys taking people out on boats and bananas and things were nice fellas and it was pretty cheap.

St. Vincent

The port city is pretty dire to be honest. Wish we’d gone off somewhere but didn’t fancy a 3 hour round trip to get to the waterfalls. Plus the weather was crap all day so don’t feel we missed much. Would like to visit again and try and go somewhere.
