The Viking Sun was seven week old when we boarded -- gorgeous! Some rough spots with a new ship, but minimal and resolved. But the itinerary was lacking --- way too much time on buses (nice as they were, with great tour guides). If the ship was too large to go into to the shallow Havana harbor, why not stay outside the harbor and use the tenders since it had to use these in Cienfuegos anyway?
Overall food and service were good, but service was much better for dinner when 300 people were still off-ship on excursions. We were disappointed in the Italian speciality restaurant -- menu was plastic, crowded tables; service and food were OK, but not special. The Captial Table speciality restaurant was excellent -- interesting fixed menu, with supurb service.
We heartily recommend the Viking Sun, but not the itinerary if only one port in Cuba.
As far as we knew there was not an outreach to the LGBT community until we asked for a designated meeting place. On other cruise lines this has been included in their standard schedule. Viking did accommodate an announcement after we asked (with a very good turn out), but no one from staff came to welcome us, as is typical on other lines. Disappointing overall.
We were disappoinnted in the size of the cabin. Having traveled on several Viking river cruises, we were surprised at the confines of the cabin on the Viking Sun. Friends in a "penthouse" cabin had sufficient room that we did not have.
Entertainment was good for a medium sized ship -- much better than the Viking River Cruises, but not at the level of larger ships.
The guide was knowledgable, but hard to hear.View All 44 City Tour Reviews
Probalby a nice city to visit based upon the comments of others, but we only rode through it as part of excursions to other places. Would have liked at least a half day to explore the city.
While the actual tour of Havana was great, with interesting historical perspectives, the four hour bus ride each way was too long. The four squares and the galley were interesting and educational, but it was for too long a day. Allowing for only five hours sleep was ridiculous, so most of the folks left the entertainment in Havana an hour realy in order to get some sleep (we were loving the show at the Tropicana!)View All 251 City Tour Reviews
Nice tour, and the restoration is good.View All 76 Historical City Center Reviews
Fun, we only got to stay for half of the show because of having to get up at 5:00am to be at breakfast at 6:00am to be on the bus at 6:45am. Not a fun time.View All 82 Tropicana Cabaret Reviews
