This was our third Avalon river cruise having taken the Seine and Rhine previously. We chose Avalon based on its reputation and recommendations from friends. All three cruises were different but the the quality level was consistently very high. We are already talking about a fourth cruise. The ship itself was quiet and absolutely seemed to glide down the river. Public areas in the lounges, dining areas and deck were clean, well maintained and beautifully designed so when you first board the ship you have a positive first impression. Our cabin was nicely appointed with a very comfortable bed and plenty of room to store luggage. The room also had a flat panel TV and WiFi access. A real selling point for Avalon is the wall to wall sliding glass doors on the top two levels. You can open the doors and watch the views while cruising down the river. Dining options and quality were very high with a cordial staff. There are plenty of menu options for dinner and wine is included. Breakfast and lunch are typically buffet style but there are options for custom items like omelettes. The back lounge is a favorite gathering point for the men in the morning as it is well stocked with coffee, tea and donuts to enjoy while the wives are preparing for the day. The front loung is very well appointed with comfortable chairs and a well stocked bar. All three of our cruises featured a musician for nightly entertainment. Service from the hotel staff, wait staff and crew were first rate. The cruise director was friendly and knowledgeable; always providing a daily briefing page of the day’s activities. Shore excursions were led by wonderful local guides. For passengers with mobility issues many of the shore excursions offered a slower pace group. All excursions included a wireless transmitter with ear pice so you could always hear and understand the guide. Busses and bus drivers were great. Particularly memorable were the Sound of Music tour and the trip to Neushwanstein. At the end of the river cruise portion of our trip we stayed at the Hotel Sofitel in Munich. It was a real treat. Transportation to and from the airports was very accommodating. I recommend this cruise very highly.
