  3. Viking Star
We selected this Viking Ocean itinerary as an ideal way to check off our bucket list visits to Croatia (Split and Dubrovnik) and Kotor, Montenegro. We've been to Venice before as well as Corfu and Katakolon (Olympia), Greece, but pleasantly discovered much about these ports that we did not know from before. We chose Viking Ocean based on our past superb experience with Viking River cruises. We were pretty much totally impressed with our experience beginning to end. We used Viking Air which includes meeting and transportation from and to the airport. The day we arrived from Paris in Venice, the severe fog had delayed our inbound flight by more than one hour. It also prevented all water taxi operations from the Venice airport. This did not faze Viking a bit: they met us promptly outside customs and used Mercedes vans to transport us to a location in Venice where we could complete our final journey via water taxi on the Grande Canal to the Westin Europa & Regina (one of two Viking-selected top ranked hotel) for our 2-night pre-cruise extension. On embarkation day, we were picked up at the Westin and transported directly to the ship via water taxi. Check in was absolutely the fastest and smoothest we have ever experienced from more than 20 past cruises. Our cabin (Deluxe Veranda, Deck 6 mid), was open and ready an hour before promised. Our luggage arrived exactly as promised. Our cabin was almost spotless (except for some minor carpet stains and scuffs under the coffee maker). We would have preferred a few more drawers or closet bins for storage, but we found a spot for everything. The large bed was super comfortable. The in-room infotainment system was excellent. The heated floor in the bathroom was a nice touch. Aiming the shower head was a bit of a challenge, but we got the hang of it. Dining options were plentiful and all very good. It was great that lunch and dinner menus were updated daily on the in-cabin TV. Surprisingly our only slight disappointment was in Manfred's the speciality Italian restaurant, where we had very mediocre service. All of our dining other dining experiences in the Restaurant (main dining room) and the World Cafe (buffet) were outstanding, both with service and food selection/quality). We had notified Viking that we would be celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. They surprised us with a beautiful heart shaped cake in our cabin. Much appreciated. The ShoreEx staff did an excellent job. All were well organized and run on schedule. All of our guides spoke excellent English and were very experienced. On several of our excursions, Viking staff participated for quality control. Glad to see this. The ship's staff from top to bottom were super friendly and made every attempt to be helpful. Disembarkation in Athens was very well organized. All passengers had to be out of their cabins by 8:00am even though port transportation times ranged from 7:15 to 10:00. So the atrium waiting area got a little crowded, but manageable. Luggage pickup was smooth with no waiting in the terminal. Viking's coach transportation to the airport was stressful as traffic resulted in 1-1/2 hours to get there, making our flight departure a close call....but we made it thankfully. We thoroughly enjoyed this Viking Ocean experience and most definitely hope to sail with them again, Ocean and River. Viking really has their act together!!

Perfect 50th Wedding Anniversary Experience!

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Corfu
This was advertised as a cooking class with a professional chef. After an excellent walking tour of Corfu, we arrived at a beautiful villa overlooking the bay. The villa owner talked us through her recipes for Moussaka, traditional Tzatziki, traditional Baklava, and traditional Greek Salad. Nothing hands-on for participants. While fun, the $298 price tag (for 2) seems pretty steep for a fun lunch with a great view. Would not do this one again, or recommend it.

It rained....buckets!! Had to splash through inches of water in some areas. Our excellent local guide tried to make the best of it keeping us under cover whenever possible. Rain also prevented walking the wall around the edge of the city. Not Vikings fault...stuff happens.

  • Katakolon (Olympia)
Great excursion! The best of the entire voyage. Superb guide in Olympia! Hands on cooking at the Touris Club! Ended with group Greek dancing troupe and lively band. Really a perfect ending for our cruise. Highly recommended. At $158 (for 2), an excellent value!!

Great guide! Very interesting walled city. Easy to navigate with many good shops and cafes.

  • Split Riviera
In retrospect, would just stick with the Split tours. Visiting Trogir was interesting, but not really worth the long bus ride and limited interesting sites.

Loved Split. Wished we had skipped Trogir to spend more time here.

Excellent tour of 'hidden Venice' away from the tourist areas. Great guide who lived in the area.
